It has no transparent meaning in modern Finnish, but may be derived from the word korho which used to mean a deaf person or, in some parts of Finland, a numb-witted person. The name originates from Eastern Finland and is much older than its closest competitor for the title of the most common Finnish surname, Virtanen.
