Kurbin is a municipality in Lezhë County, northwestern Albania. It was created in 2015 by the merger of the former municipalities Fushë Kuqe, Laç, Mamurras and Milot. The seat of the municipality is the town Laç.[1] The total population is 46,291 (2011 census), in a total area of 269.03 km2.[2] It is coterminous with the former Kurbin District.
History
The origing of the name remains unknown until today. One hypothesis comes from Professor David Luka. He believes that the name derives from the merger of Kurbin Illyrian word karp-rock (stone).
Kurbin has been inhabited since the 14th century. After the death of Skanderbeg most of the population emigrated to Italy, Calabria, or climbed mountains in the remote areas. The resettlement of Kurbin was realized later on, because of the protection that people had to take from the Ottoman attacks. A portion of the population that came there later, also came from Kosovo, who moved from the Serbian oppression.[3]
