Ariel Lin (Chinese: 林依晨; pinyin: Lín Yīchén; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lîm I-sîn, Hakka: Lim Yi Sen; born 29 October 1982) is a Taiwanese actress and singer, who won Best Actress at the 43rd and 47th Golden Bell Awards. She majored in Korean and Literature at National Chengchi University, Taiwan.[1] She also obtained her Master of Arts (MA) in Acting for Screen from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London in 2014.
Early life
On 29 October 1982, Lin was born in Yilan, Taiwan to a common family. She has a younger brother. Her parents divorced when she was very young. The two children were raised only by their mother, and the three lived in poverty for many years.[2]
Lin holds a BA in Korean and Literature from National Chengchi University.
Career
Ariel Lin was first discovered in a Taiwanese beauty contest. She then made her debut TV appearance in the television drama series True Love, and began hosting the TVBS-G variety program I Love Muizk.
In 2004, Ariel made her film debut in Love Me, If You Can, which earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 40th Golden Horse Awards. She gained more popularity after starring in the idol drama series My Secret Garden II and Love Contract opposite Mike He. She also sang the theme song for Love Contract, titled "Alone in the northern hemisphere", which topped the KTV and ring tone charts for 12 weeks.
In 2005, Ariel rose to mainstream popularity for her role as Yuan Xiangqin in the popular Taiwanese idol drama It Started with a Kiss. The series topped ratings in Taiwan, and was a hit across Asia.
The following year, she starred in Tokyo Juliet alongside Wu Chun and received praise for her performance. She also starred in the Chinese television series The Little Fairy as the Seventh Fairy Maiden. This was Ariel's first Chinese and wuxia drama. The Little Fairy garnered high ratings, and marked her successful foray into the Chinese market.
In 2007, Ariel reunited with Joe Cheng in They Kiss Again, the sequel of It Started with a Kiss. The drama achieved an average rating of 3.43, becoming one of the highest rated idol dramas. Ariel's performance in the drama won her the Best Actress award at the 43rd Golden Bell Awards, becoming the first actress in history to win that award with an idol drama. The same year, she released the single "Adventure of Lunia" as the theme song for the video game Lunia: Record of Lunia War.
In 2008, Ariel starred in The Legend of the Condor Heroes, adapted from Louis Cha's novel of the same title. She plays Huang Rong, opposite her The Little Fairy co-star Hu Ge who plays Guo Jing. She also starred in the Taiwanese series Love or Bread; this marked her third collaboration with Joe Cheng.
In November 2008, Ariel was confirmed to play the role of Kyōko alongside Jerry Yan as Tsuruga Ren, in a live-adaption of Japanese shōjo manga Skip Beat! (スキップ・ビート! Sukippu Bīto!) by Yoshiki Nakamura, titled Extravagant Challenge (Chinese: 華麗的挑戰; pinyin: Hua Li De Tiao Zhan).[3] However the production was postponed indefinitely[4] and subsequently re-cast.
In 2009, Ariel signed with a three-year, three-album contract with Avex Taiwan. In July 2009, she released her first album Blissful Encounter. The first music video of the first lead track "甜蜜花園" (Sweet Garden) was released in mid-June and music video for the second lead track "螢火蟲" (Firefly), was released in early July, with feature appearances by Donghae and Siwon of Korean boy band Super Junior. The album sold 20,000 copies within 2 days. The same year, she made her musical theater debut in the play The War and Peace between Men and Women.
In 2010, Ariel released her second album A Wonderful Journey, which surpassed the sales of her first album.
In 2011, Ariel starred in a Gala Television (GTV) production, titled In Time with You, co-starring Bolin Chen. In Time With You became the highest rated idol drama of the year in Taiwan with an average rating of 2.81%. Broadcasting rights of the drama were sold to various parts of Asia, including China's Hunan TV, and achieved high ratings. The theme "friendship and love between best friends" displayed in the drama series was also one of the most talked about topics, triggering much discussions online. Ariel received critical acclaim for her performance, and experienced a sharp rise in popularity and recognition. She subsequently won her second Golden Bell Award for Best Actress.
The same year, Ariel announced that she would be shifting her career focus from TV to films, due to health reasons.
In 2013, Ariel starred alongside Feng Shaofeng in the historical period costume drama Prince of Lan Ling. Following the airing of the drama, Ariel announced that she would be leaving the entertainment industry for one year to further her studies in England.
In 2014, the crime police film Sweet Alibis starring Ariel and Alec Su premiered in Taiwan and China. It was chosen by the Most Popular Taiwanese Film at the 6th Straits Forum. She also had another film released in the same year, titled My Lover is a Superman, adapted from Giddens Ko's novel A-Choo!. However, it was postponed due to Kai Ko's drug scandal.
In 2015, she starred in Go Lala Go 2, the sequel to the 2010 hit movie Go Lala Go!. She then starred in the romantic drama film Another Woman. This was Ariel's first time challenging scenes with a large amount of skin exposure. She was also cast in the romantic-comedy film My Egg Boy. My Egg Boy was the first Taiwanese film to shoot at Sweden.
In 2016, after her marriage, Ariel made her comeback in the crime thriller The Mysterious Family.
Personal life
On December 24, 2014, Ariel married a businessman named Charles Lin. The couple first met due to mutual friends. Once in a wedding, both of them were the groomsman and the bridemaid relatively. Then the two started dating until their flash marriage.[5]
