On January 18, 1950, the offices of Minister of Mines and Resources and Minister of Reconstruction and Supply were abolished and replaced by the offices of the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Minister of Mines and Technical Surveys and Minister of Resources and Development.

The portfolio was renamed from "Resources and Development" to "Northern Affairs and National Resources" in 1953.

In 1966, the portfolio's responsibilities were divided between the new posts of Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (List) and Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources (List).
