Louis A. Mackey (born December 29, 1977 in Richmond, California) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at the University of Akron.
Early years
Mackey played at Gavilan College, before transferring to the University of Akron.[1]
Professional career
Dallas Cowboys
He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys after a tryout on August 12, 2001. He was released before the season started and signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on November 16 and played in only one game against the Philadelphia Eagles,[2] before being placed on the injured reserve list with a fractured tibia on November 21.
After being released on August 28, 2002, he was signed to the team's practice squad.[3] On September 13, he was promoted to the active roster and would proceed to lead the team in special teams tackles with 18, while making 9 defensive tackles and one fumble recovery. He was waived on August 17, 2003.
Montreal Alouettes (CFL)
After working as a substitute teacher for three years, he attended a tryout and was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Alouettes in May 2006. He appeared in 10 games, starting 4 and splitting time at middle linebacker with Dwayne Taylor, while registering 16 tackles. In 2007, although he was initially released, he played in 6 games after being recalled on July 25 when Kai Ellis suffered a foot injury.[4]
