Madarganj (Bengali: মাদারগঞ্জ) is an Upazila of Jamalpur District in the Division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh.[1]

Geography

Madarganj is located at 24°53′30″N 89°45′00″E / 24.8917°N 89.7500°E / 24.8917; 89.7500. It has 41,058 household units and a total area 225.38 km².

Demographics

Before the British Colonial period, this area's most of the people was Hindu by religion. But in early seventeenth century,spread of Islamic activities reached in this area and people start converting their religion to Islam and it continued for next one and half century. Until the separation of the Indian subcontinent, people from both religions lived tougher in harmony. Although the ratio of the two major religions was nearly same. Later Islam became the majority of people's religion. When the Liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan started, people from Hindu religion started migrating to Indian territory for a safer place as the occupying Pakistani military's aggression was intolerable for those people to stay here. Also before the war Muslims were still the largest ratio in concern of religious statistics. Recently, very few people (not more than 2–3%) from different religions lives in this sub district – most of them are Hindu. There are approximately 3,57,000 people lives in the upazila.

Administration

Madarganj has 7 unions, 108 mauzas/mahallas and 123 villages. It has a municipality named Madergong Puorasava. Every five years, the upazila and Union Parisad elect the representatives (commissionaire) and chairman for Upazila Municipality and 7 union Council. As these administrative bodies are the part of local government, so its crucial part for both the local administrative and economic development.

Education

There are 40 colleges and 89 primary schools, one government college, one girls' college, one government girls' school, three non-government girls' schools, and three boys' high schools. The main educational institutions are Jharkata High School established in 1907, Balijuri F M High school, established 1910. The Balijuri Rowsan Ara govt. Girls School was established in 1960, first headmaster was Late Altaf Ali Khan.(BA.B.ed)was well known English teacher in west jamalpur. Madarganj A.H.Z Government College was established in 1969. Madarganj A.M Pilot High School is a good result high School.It was established in 1967 and Among of all non-government high school, Gunaritala High School is one of the oldest and recognized school that established in 1947. Mohish Bathan R M High School is a good result High School. It was established in 1946. Recently established a High School name Mirza Rowsan ali secondary school junail, Lalduba High School but the discipline of the school is very good. Patadaha koyra high school is a very good high school. Among the all High Schools Shamgonj Kalibari High School is a good result High School. It was established in 1947. The students of this school have gone on to study in the renowned universities of this country (BUET,CUET,KUET,RUET, Medical, DU, RU, CU and other public universities.

Sixty percent of the population are educated.ss
