The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA), headquartered at Indore, India, is the governing body of cricket activities in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the Madhya Pradesh cricket team. The board was formed in 1940 as the Holkar Cricket Association.

It is affiliated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India. This association was earlier known as Holkar Cricket Association.

Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) is one of the Premier Cricket Governing provincial units affiliated to The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association is operate from Indore.

MPCA is one of the oldest affiliates of the BCCI – since 1940’s. We cover the second largest State in India – the entire Madhya Pradesh with 49 districts, almost 308,000 km2.

Developing the young cricketers and nurturing them for the tough competition at the First Class and International circuit has been the main focus of MPCA since its inception. It is our continuous endeavour to extend best of cricketing facilities to the upcoming breed of cricketers from our place. These youngsters are going to be a part of the supply chain for the higher grade teams of the State, and are the Assets of MPCA in a real sense.

The board's prime objective is to upgrade the skills of the potentially talented cricketers and extend regular mentoring facilities so that the players blossom at the right age. We believe in extending competitive exposure to the gifted youngsters to augment their development process.

MPCA has a grand legacy of cricketers being groomed with the efforts of our Association. The first captain of the Indian Test side – Col.C K Nayudu was from our place. Capt. S Mushtaq Ali, the first Indian to score a Test century on a foreign soil represented MPCA throughout his cricketing days.

In the recent past, MPCA has contributed in shaping up the careers of renowned Indian cricketers like Narendra Hirwani, Rajesh Chouhan, Amay Khurasiya, Naman Ojha etc.

MPCA is a regular participant in all domestic tournaments conducted by the BCCI. MPCA is the only provincial unit in India that can boast of having two International venues under our control. Both the venues offer contemporary facilities for the International cricket events.

Till date, MPCA has successfully hosted 22 One Day International games and 2 IPL matches. Till 2001, Nehru Stadium was the venue for hosting ODI at Indore had 9 matches. The first ever Ranji Trophy Final under floodlights was played at Capt. Roop Singh Stadium in April 1997. The India versus West Indies ODI in December 2011 saw Virender Sehwag shattering the opponents while he reached the majestic figure of 219 runs.

MPCA also operates a residential academy which provides regular cricket coaching, systematic fitness management, specific nutrition, regular health check up and purposeful recreation along with the education to the potentially talented young cricketers. Amay Khurasiya, a Level C Coach, is the chief coach of our Academy.

MPCA is goldenly associated with two of the milestones in the cricketing career of Sachin Tendulkar. He scored his ten thousandth run during the ODI played at Indore against Australia in 2001 and became the first male cricketer to score a double century in ODI against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010. Add to this, the recent score of 219 runs by Virender Sehwag.

History

Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association is a body controlling and governing the game of cricket in the State of Madhya Pradesh. MPCA is an affiliated unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

A look at the transition of MPCA will take us back to the year 1932 when the Central India Cricket Association came into existence. Later on, the Holkar Cricket Association from 1940-41 to 1954-55, Madhya Bharat (1955 – 57) and subsequently the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association since 1957 till date.

Cricket flourished in India as a reasonably popular mode of recreation during the earlier part of the twentieth century. During that period, the game received patronage from the royal families and princely states.

Before the Indian Independence, Indore, earlier known as Indore, was a princely state under the control of the Holkar Dynasty. Indore was the hub of cricket activities during that era.

Late HH MaharajaYeshwantrao Holkar II of Indore State was a great cricket aficionado and was keen to extend royal benevolence to cricket and upcoming cricketers. To boost up the local cricket set-up, he invited prominent players like Col. C K Nayudu, Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, Chandu Sarawate, C S Nayudu, Khandu Rangnekar, Hiralal Gaekwad and Kamala Bhandarkar to play cricket for his team – The Holkars. Capt. S Mushtaq Ali, Major M M Jagdale, J N Bhaya were the local talent in his team. He also offered them job opportunity in his army. He was, perhaps, the only royal head who continued to extend necessary support to cricket and the cricketers but never played the game himself.

Col. C K Nayudu was the captain of the Indian side for the first ever test played in the year 1932 against England. The batting elegance of Syed Mushtaq Ali can be gauged from the fact that he was the first Indian to score a Test century on the foreign soil against England at Manchester in 1936).

These great cricketers played a pivotal role in development of the game in this part of the country. With enthusiastic support from the local players like Syed Mushtaq Ali, Madhavsinh Jagdale, J N Bhaya, Rameshwar Pratap Singh and other, the Holkar team appeared to be invincible.

During the period of fifteen years from 1940-41 to 1954-55, the Holkar team won the coveted Ranji Trophy on four occasions – 1945/46, 1947/48, 1950/51 and 1952/53. Moreover, they were the runner up on six occasions 1944/45, 1946/47, 1949/50, 1951/52, 1953/54 and 1954/55. This breathtaking record just suggests the strength of the Holkar team.

Subsequently, the end of Holkar era created a vacuum in the Madhya Pradesh Cricket for a few years. Though good cricketers were emerging on a regular basis, the team could not perform consistently. Players like Bhagwandas Suthar, Subodh Saxena, Sanjay Jagdale, Narendra Menon, Ashok Jagdale, Vijay Nayudu, Syed Gulrez Ali, Manohar Sharma, Ashwini Chaturvedi gave a glimpse of their talent and were amongst the leading domestic players knocking for a berth in the Indian side.

With the support from BCCI and the influx of young players, the MP team started performing as a cohesive unit and qualified regularly for the knock-out phase of the Ranji Tournament during the period from 1971 to 1980. However, the team could not replicate the winning performance of the Holkar team.

Efforts on part of MPCA helped in laying of the development pathway for the next generation of cricketers. Regular tournaments, upgradation of infrastructure, talent identification processes, appointment of seasoned coaches, services from professional players and such other measures were adopted in tandem to reach the desired goals.

Players like Narendra Hirwani, Rajesh Chauhan, J P Yadav, Amay Khurasiya, Naman Ojha to name a few, gained the benefits of these efforts on part of MPCA and marked a place in the Indian cricket with their performances.

Apart from playing a key role in development of prominent cricketers, MPCA can proudly associate itself with some of the able and suave Administrators, well acclaimed Selectors and professional resource persons who have contributed not only at the local level but also at the National scene.

Late HH Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia of Gwalior, President – BCCI, A W Kanmadikar, Secretary – BCCI, Late Madhavsinh Jagdale, Sanjay Jagdale, Narendra Hirwani (All National Selectors), Narendra Menon, Sudhir Asnani (International Umpires) have emerged from this system. Sanjay Jagdale was secretary of the BCCI from MPCA.

Today, MPCA is a well recognized for its multi-faceted efforts for the growth of cricket in this part of the country. MPCA is one of the few states in India having two Internationally recognized cricket stadiums, One at Indore – The Holkar Stadium, and the other one at Gwalior – Capt. Roop Singh Stadium. Both the venues provide all contemporary amenities and conveniences for the game and the spectators. The Holkar Stadium is considered to be one of the best cricket centre with the least costs as compared to many other properties that were created during the last ten odd years.

MPCA is inked in the history of International cricket in its own way. Sachin Tendulkar played two of his historical innings in matches hosted by MPCA. Way back in the year 2001, Sachin crossed the dream figure of 10000 runs in the One Day Internationals. This match was played against Australia at the Nehru Stadium, Indore. He became the first cricketer to do so in the history of One Day Internationals and that too in the least number of games – 266 to be precise.

The second nostalgic moment occurred on 24 February 2010. India playing against South Africa at Capt. Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior. Sachin’s willow was hammering opponent bowlers in all directions. In just 147 balls Sachin played a blistering knock of 200 runs and remained unbeaten while the team scored a mammoth score of 401 runs in 50 overs. It took nearly 40 years of waiting for a male cricketer to achieve this figure but the wait was well worth it. Sachin chose one of the better bowling attacks doing the rounds, to eclipse the record for the highest score. The spectators at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium became the envy of cricket fans as they witnessed one of the country's favourite sporting legend play a breathtaking innings.

Though under the history page, it would not be prudent if we do not mention the scintillating knock of 219 runs by Virender Sehwag during the India / West Indies ODI at Holkar Stadium on 8 December 2011.

MPCA will continue to contribute for the betterment of the game, the cricketers and all other associates of cricket in all possible ways at all times…..

In 2008, the MPCA established Sanjay Jagdale MPCA Academy in at Holkar Stadium in India with sub-academies in Gwalior, Sagar, Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Rewa and Jabalpur. The academy was named after Sanjay Jagdale.

The academy provides regular cricket coaching, systematic fitness management, specific nutrition, regular health check up and purposeful recreation along with the education to the potentially talented young cricketers.
