Markanda Mahadev Temple Complex is situated at the River banks of Wainganga River near Chamorshi town in Gdchiroli District of Maharashtra. This 8th Century CE (1200 years old) Temple Complex is called as Mini Khajuraho. Such is the beauty of this temple complex. The village is Marakand Deo which is nearest village.

The Legend

This temple Complex is dedicated to Shiva. However, the Markanda name is derived from the Markandeya rishi of Haryana who was an ardent devotee of Shiva. He went into penance for years on the banks of Markanda river, Haryana & finally tried to offer his head to Shiva when Shiva appeared & stopped hi from that. He blessed him that there would be a temple on your name.

The Temple

This temple complex is spread over 40 acres of land & many temples are in dilapidated condition. However, the beauty can be seen all over this place. This is attributed to the Rashtrakuta dynasty which ruled this part of country during 8th till 12th century. This temple has many tantrik images dedicated to Shaivaite cult,

There are many intricate idols (murtis) on the outer walls of this temple complex.

Markanda Mahadev Can be reached while going from Chandrapur to Chamorshi. After reaching a town called Mul, before Chamorshi, we have to take a left turn to reach this stunning beauty.
