Yeh Hai Mohabbatein(English: This is Love).[2] is an Indian soap opera on Star Plus. It first aired on December 3, 2013[3] and airs from Monday to Sunday in the evening and night at 07:30 pm and 11 pm. It is produced by Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms.[4] The story is partially based on Manju Kapur's novel Custody.[5] Set in Delhi,[6][7] the show follows the love story of Dr. Ishita Iyer, who is a Tamil and Ramankumar Bhalla, who is a Punjabi. Ishita is sterile and gets attached emotionally to Raman's daughter, Ruhi, who lives with her divorced father. Raman's ex-wife, Shagun, lives with her boyfriend Ashok Khanna and Aditya, her son with Raman. Due to circumstances, Raman and Ishita marry each other.[8] The show has got good response and has received high ratings throughout its run and is currently one of the top shows on Indian television. The show took a 7 year leap in April 2016.[9][10] Till now, the show has won 49 awards.

Plot

The show follows the love story of Ishita Iyer, who is a Tamilian and Raman Bhalla, who is a Punjabi. Ishita is sterile and gets attached emotionally to Raman's daughter, Ruhi, who lives with her divorced father. Raman's ex-wife, Shagun Arora, lives with her boyfriend and Raman's ex-boss and business rival Ashok Khanna and Aditya (Adi), her and Raman's son. Bhallas and Iyers are neighbours. Due to circumstances, Raman and Ishita marry each other for Ruhi's custody and gradually fall in love with each other and lead a happy life.

Shagun creates trouble in Ishita and Raman's life. Shagun wants to marry Ashok and Ishita's sister Mihika is marrying Shagun's brother Mihir. Mihir treats Raman as his brother. Ashok tries to molest Mihika. Shagun and Ashok's marriage is cancelled. Ashok blackmails Mihika and Mihika marries him to save Mihir. Soon Raman's son Aditya(Adi) with Shagun also comes to them and lives with them. Shagun tries to create troubles in Ishita and Raman's marriage using Adi but she fails. Ishita gets Raman's sister Rinky and Mihir married. Shagun leaves Bhalla house. Mihika reveals true reason behind marrying Ashok and divorces him. Raman's brother Romi marries a pregnant Sarika. Romi had left her before but later accepted her for his son Rohit. Ishita's ex-fiance Subramaniam Chandran/Subbu returns in Ishita's life. Subbu tried to created problems in Raman and Ishita's life to revenge. But later his misunderstanding is cleared. Shagun also turns positive and everyone started living a good life.

Sarika starts supporting Ashok because Ashok, knows Sarika's secret. Sarika had lied to Romi that Rohit is his son. Sarika had a miscarried Romi's child. She adopted the baby from an orphanage. Romi gets to know about this truth and throws Sarika out of his life. Mihir's wife and Raman's sister Rinky is murdered. Shagun is marrying Ishita's doctor Manoj Paul. Ishita took Manoj's treatment and gets pregnant. Ishita has a miscarriage due to an accident. Shagun becomes surrogate mother for Ishita's baby. Nidhi Chabra a successful lawyer enters in Raman's life, who had come to take revenge from Raman for her father's death. She became Ishita's lawyer and framed Ishita in a murder case. In order to get proof of Ishita's innocence, Raman fakes love for Nidhi. He finds the evidence that proves Ishita innocent. Nidhi gets arrested, but she runs away.

Shagun gives birth to Ishita's daughter Pihu. Nidhi kidnaps Pihu from hospital. Nidhi asks Raman to give Ruhi to her and take Pihu with him and asks him not to inform the police. Raman does the same but Ishita secretly calls the police to the place. Unfortunately, things didn't happen as expected and Ishita takes Pihu but Nidhi ran away with Ruhi and both of them were declared as dead in a car accident. Post this accident, Raman gets completely shaken and blames Ishita as she has informed the police, he scolded her a lot. Ishita also couldn't bear Ruhi's death and attempts suicide recalling Ruhi's death and Raman's bitter words and she is declared dead. Everybody is shocked. Mihika blames Raman for Ishita's suicide. Romi also breaks all his ties with Raman because Raman had said that Romi was keeping eye on Pihu in hospital but Nidhi successfully kidnapped Pihu. Ishita is saved by her friend Abhimanyu Raghav(Mani) who meets with accident while saving Ishita.

7 years later

Ishita lives in Australia with Abhimanyu and his niece Aliya. Raman lives with his family in Delhi. Shagun lives as Raman's wife(in front of Pihu) with Raman's family to take care of Pihu. Pihu looks like Ruhi. Pihu doesn't know about Ishita being her biological mother and assumes Shagun as her mother. Romi and Mihika live in same house. Romi is now a big businessman and has made Ashok his business partner. Pihu unknowingly goes to Ishita's family's house and sees Ishita's portrait with garland. Ruhi lives with Nidhi in Australia. Nidhi has changed her identity and become Nimrit Chopra. Nidhi has changed Ruhi's identity into Rockstar Ruhaan. Aliya has become personal assistant of Ruhaan/Ruhi. Ruhi sees Ishita in Australia. Ruhi now hates Ishita and Raman because of misunderstanding that Ishita and Raman left her and given her to Nidhi for Pihu. Nidhi has poisoned her mind. Abhimanyu(Mani) loves Ishita but Ishita does not reciprocate his feelings and he also does not expect from Ishita to reciprocate his feelings. Ruhi decides to never let Ishita and Raman reunite.

Raman came to Australia to buy Abhimanyu's company but he refused to sell. Pihu also came with Raman and she sees Ishita. Pihu tells Shagun that she has seen Ishita in Australia. Shagun also comes to Australia to confirm about Ishita. Ruhaan/Ruhi agrees to become brand ambassador for both companies of Abhimanyu and Raman. Romi decides to marry Mihika. Ishita and Raman are travelling in same flight to Mumbai for Ruhi/Ruhaan's Ad campaign. Their flight gets hijacked. Ishita gets injured by bullet and Raman admits her in hospital without knowing that she is Ishita because her face was blackened because of smoke. Raman and Ishita's families get to know about flight being hijacked. Mihika has come to Mumbai to see Raman and sees Ishita and gets to know that Ishita is alive. Mihika tells Ishita that she is getting married and tells her about her daughter Pihu who looks like Ruhi. Adi comes Mumbai and to hospital to show Mihika wedding dress design. He sees Ishita and gets shocked. Mihika tells him that she met Ishita two days before and Ishita and Raman were travelling in same flight. Mihika tells Adi to not to tell anyone about Ishita being alive. Adi without telling his name meets Ishita. Adi wants to reunite Ishita and Raman.

Raman and Ishita meet each other but Raman is drunk and does not recognize her. Some goons misbehave with Aliya and blame is put on Adi. Ishita meets Adi and realizes that he is her son. Raman and family see Ishita and gets to know that she is alive. Abhishek finds goons that misbehaved with Aliya and Adi is proven innocent. Raman is upset and angry because Ishita didn't tell anyone about being alive. Raman's mother Santosh Kaur tells Ishita to return to their house. Adi decides to get Ishita meet Pihu. Ishita meets Pihu saving her from accident. Raman takes Pihu away from Ishita. Romi marries Mihika. Ruhi as Ruhaan comes to Romi's wedding and is shocked to see and meet Pihu who looks like her and she also meets Ishita and Adi. Romi comes to know that Ishita is alive. Ishita decides clear differences between Bhallas and Iyers. Ishita comes to live in same building. Shagun returns from Australia and is shocked to see Ishita. In front of Ishita, Raman asks Shagun about marriage. Nidhi tells Ruhi about Shagun and Raman's marriage. Ruhi in her original look also comes to live in same building with Ishita and tells Ishita her name Ruhi Chopra. Pihu has consumed expired medicines. Ruhi admits Pihu to hospital and informs Ishita and Raman. Romi sees Nidhi in Ashok's house. Ishita sees Nidhi when she came to meet Ruhi. Romi tells Ishita that he has seen Nidhi in Ashok's house. Ishita also tells him that she has seen Nidhi. They get Nidhi's whereabouts. Romi stops Shagun and Raman's marriage and tells everyone that Nidhi is found. Nidhi is caught and arrested. Romi is on verge to kill Nidhi. Aliya and Adi meet Ruhi as Ruhaan and inform everyone that Nidhi is Ruhaan's manager. Ruhi goes to Ashok's house. Ashok gets to know that Ruhi is Ruhaan and Ruhi runs away. Pihu tells everyone that Ruhaan is at Ashok's house. Ishita and Raman reach there and meet Ruhi. Everyone meet Ruhi but Ruhi tells them that she hates Ishita and Raman and wants to live with Nidhi. Ishita and Raman decide to file Ruhi's custody case. Ruhi goes against Ishita and Raman in court. Judge gives 30 days to Ishita and Raman to convince Ruhi to live with them and win back her trust. Ishita comes to stay at Bhalla house which makes Shagun insecure about her position in Bhalla family.

In her birthday party, Ruhi insults Ishita and Raman but later accepts their gifts. Pihu convinces Ruhi to come to Bhalla house. Ruhi comes to Bhalla house only for some days. Romi decides to return to Bhalla house till Judge's decision and comes to Bhalla house. Ishita tells Raman that they should transfer house on Ruhi's trust's name and Ruhi hears it and misunderstands. Ruhi spends time with family members. Ishita organizes family dinner. At dinner, Ishita and Raman give papers to Ruhi but Nidhi and Ashok had changed papers. Aliya and Adi organize dashing men competition. Family members won different awards and Raman wins dashing man award and dedicates it Ruhi. Ruhi gets to know that Pihu has fever and because of misunderstanding blames Ishita. Ruhi has bond with Pihu.

Ruhi puts condition that Ishita and Raman should get married then she will live here. Ishita, Raman and family agree for marriage. But before marriage, Nidhi and Ashok plan to kidnap Ruhi and mistakenly Ishita gets kidnapped. Everybody start searching Ishita. Pihu tells Ruhi that she has seen Ishita's saree and they tell it to Raman. Raman tells family about Ishita being kidnapped. Everybody doubt on Nidhi and Ashok and this doubt is confirmed when Raman gets Nidhi and Ashok's video. Raman shows it to everyone and judge. Everybody also come to know that Nidhi and Ashok had lost Ishita. Raman throws Nidhi out. Ishita returns house when judge was announcing her decision that she is giving Ruhi's custody to Bhalla family. Finally Ruhi accepts Ishita and starts loving her more than ever.

Raman gets to know that his lawyer Anil Nagpal is behind kidnapping. Ismail, one of the kidnapper's wife tells Ishita that a woman is behind kidnapping. Anil Nagpal tells Ishita that Nidhi is behind kidnapping. But in reality, Shagun is behind kidnapping. Ishita tells everyone about Shagun's marriage with Abhimanyu(Mani). Ruhi feels guilty and regrets for misunderstanding Ishita and Ruhi tells Pihu to call Ishita as Ishimaa. Ruhi decides to tell Pihu that Ishita is her mother and decides to show and prove it. Ruhi tells Pihu about surrogate mothers and surrogate babies. Shagun doesn't want Ruhi to tell Pihu this truth so she calls Ishita and tells her to stop Ruhi. Ishita tells Ruhi that this is not right time to tell Pihu. Shagun refuses to marry Abhimanyu(Mani) but later agrees to marry him on Nidhi's insistence. Aliya is angry on Abhimanyu(Mani)'s marriage but later agrees. A love triangle starts between Aliya, Mihir and Adi.

Shagun decides to use Pihu against Ishita and manipulates Pihu against Ishita. Shagun tells Pihu that Ishita is bad woman. Pihu starts hating Ishita. Anil had sent a letter to Raman in which real culprit's name is mentioned. Ishita finds letter in Raman's room and comes to know that Shagun is mastermind and culprit. Ishita with Abhishek goes stop Shagun and Mani's marriage but marriage is already happened. Ishita tells Bhalla and Iyer families that Shagun is the mastermind. Shagun blames Ashok. Raman refuses to believe Ishita. Shagun tells Pihu to go to Mani's house. Pihu goes to Mani's house without telling everyone. Ishita asks Shagun that why did used Pihu in her plan. Shagun tells Ishita that Ruhi, Adi love her but Pihu will never love her. Ishita tells Shagun that Pihu is her blood and she will love her. Shagun challenges Ishita on Pihu's custody case. Ruhi also supports Ishita. Ishita and Raman reverse their roles. Ishita starts taking care of Raman's business and Raman takes care of Pihu and house. Shagun helps Nidhi to come out of jail. Adi accidently tells Raman that he loves Aliya. Aliya tells Ishita that she loves someone. Ishita hears Adi talking to Aliya and assumes that Aliya also loves Adi. Shagun comes to know that Aliya loves Mihir. Shagun decides to use it against Ishita. Ishita gets project in Raman's favour and Raman takes part in cooking competition with Pihu. They both go for date but Pihu comes there and Raman goes to dinner with her. Ishita also comes to same restaurant. Shagun also comes there and Raman warns Shagun to stay away from Pihu. Pihu tells Raman that she will leave Bhalla house if Ishita stays there. So, Ishita leaves Bhalla house and goes to Iyer house.

Raman and Ishita go for date at Ishita's clinic. Shagun goes there with Pihu pretending to having toothache. Adi tells Raman that Shagun is coming there with Pihu. Raman hides. Ishita gives injection to Shagun. Shagun comes to know that Adi loves Aliya. She tells it to Nidhi. Raman gets prize in cooking competition. Aliya and Mihir meet with accident. Aliya admits Mihir in hospital and tells Ishita about Mihir's accident. Ishita comes to hospital and Aliya accidentally tells Ishita that she loves Mihir. Adi comes to know that Aliya loves Mihir because Aliya tells Adi that she loves Mihir. Adi is heartbroken. Adi blames Ishita for not telling him truth. Ishita tells Raman about it. Mihir goes to Mani's house for some days. Shagun tells Ishita that she will get Aliya and Mihir married. Adi tells Aliya that he loved her but in the hospital she told everyone that she loves Mihir. He tells Abhimanyu that he doesn't want to have Aliya working on the project with them. Abhimanyu agrees. Adi comes house drunk. Mihir makes Aliya realize that what she is thinking is wrong and tells her that he doesn't love her. Adi threatens Aliya that he would not let her be happy. Aliya decides to apologize to Adi and calls him to meet her. While going to meet her, Adi gets drunk and gets unconscious. He doesn't remember what happened. Shagun sends notice of Pihu's custody case to Raman. In court, Shagun shows birth certificate of Pihu in which Shagun's name is written as Pihu's mother. Mani testifies in favour of Shagun and court gives Pihu's custody to Shagun.Ishita and Raman get angry with Mani.Mani later apologizes to Ishita but she is still angry with him.Raman starts hating Mani.Shagun and Ashok creates misunderstanding between them.They do not let Aliya and Adi meet.Aliya and Adi meet secretly.Ishita wants Mani and Raman to meet and sort out their differences.Ishita gets them meet in hotel.Ashok tells Mani and Raman he saw that Aliya and Adi are there. They call Aliya and Adi there. Mani and Raman come to know that Aliya and Adi have met there before.Mani and Raman get angry on Aliya and Adi.Aliya tells Mani that she loves Adi. Mani decides about Alia's marriage with another guy.Romi, Mihika, Ishita, Adi decide to stop it.Romi and Adi threaten that boy.Ishita tries to contact Aliya's grandmother Shobana Venkatesh to stop her engagement.Ishita and Adi go to stop Aliya's engagement.Aliya's grandmother comes there with Raman and stops this engagement. Their families become happy. They perform sangeet. Aliya's grandmother announces about Adi and Aliya's marriage and she puts one condition in front of Raman and Ishita that Adi and Alia will marry if they too get married again and during Adi and Aliya's engagement Raman and Ishita get married again. Everyone plans Raman and Ishita's wedding ceremony including henna, sangeet and everything.Mihika with Mihir goes to meet Kunal Sethi who is a lawyer for Pihu's custody.Their wedding is South Indian style thanks to Aliya's grandmother so yeah. Even Pihu takes part thinking the ceremony is for Adi and Aliya.On their wedding, they wake up at 4am and go to the temple. They do all the rituals and they bump into Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor.they star in yhm to promote their new movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. All this happens and their wedding is successful.But Shagun comes back early from Chennai and takes Pihu to the wedding.Everyone is shocked. Pihu says she hates Raman.Pihu overhears Mani and Shagun talk and finds out that Ishita is her real mother. She confronts Shagun but she denies it. Ishita goes to their house and swears on Pihu's life she is her real mother and explains. Raman is there and lashes out at her for telling as he didn't want Pihu to know.Pihu comes with them to engagement ceremony. Engagement ceremony happens. Mihika gets a call from an unknown person and he blackmails her saying he has pictures of Mihika and Mihir and all. She panics. Ishita finds out. Raman meets Romi's friend Kunal Sethi and talks to him about pihu's case. Ishita meets Raman and Kunal and after like legit 5 mins she goes. But she took the wrong phone. She took Kunal's phone unknowingly and calls up Mihika. Mihika gets tensed because the blackmailer is calling her again aka Kunal aka Ishita.Mihika tells Ishita about blackmailing.Ishita soon finds out that Kunal is blackmailer.Kunal is blackmailing Mihika because of Ashok.Because Ashok has promised him that his brother will get ticket for election.Ishita comes to know about it and tells it to Simmi, Mihika, Mihir.They plan to get Mihika's CD from Kunal but their plan fails.Kunal comes to know it.Ishita and Mihika get arrested for blackmailing Kunal.Ashok calls media to show it.Shagun makes Pihu watch this news.Raman bails out Ishita and MIhika.Shagun creates drama of Pihu eating sleeping pills because of depression.Ishita wants to take Pihu to child counselor for Pihu to tell the truth.Pihu goes with Aliya to the counselor and Shagun comes to know about it.She goes to Kunal and he gives her idea. Raman blames Ishita for Pihu going away. Pihu is leaving for Bangkok.Raman leaves Bhalla house to be with Pihu blaming Ishita.It is their plan to be with Pihu.

1 year later

Raman has moved with Shagun to Bangkok, where she is enjoying a lavish lifestyle while Raman nurtures Pihu. On the other hand, Ishita is living in India and handling all duties that Raman had left behind. Soon, with the excuse of a meeting, Ishita leaves for Australia where she meets Raman secretly. While, hiding the matter from Shagun and their family, but Ruhi follows Ishita to Australia, as she believes that Ishita has an affair with Vidyut, but actually Vidyut is helping Raman and Ishita reunite and Shagun wants to flirt with Vidyut. Shagun knows about their truth and get shocked.

After this, Ruhi helps Ishita and Raman getting back Pihu by telling Pihu about the sacrifices of Ishita and Ishita is her real mother and she was seperated from family for 7 years.she married Raman when Ruhi was of Pihu's age.She is her sister like Adi is her brother. Then, Pihu understands Ishitha. She comes to Delhi with Ishita and Raman. Later, She went to meet Shagun where Shagun scolded her for leaving her leaving Pihu disappointed. Raman invites Vidyut for dinner to his house.

Production

The show is produced by Ekta Kapoor under her banner of Balaji Telefilms. The show was first called Mera Tera Rishta Purana but later was changed to Ye Hai Mohabbatein. Cezanne Khan(who is well famous for his role of Anurag in Kasautii Zindagii Kay) was first approached to play the main lead opposite Divyanka Tripathi, but later Karan Patel was finalized to play Raman Bhalla. Ruhanika Dhawan was opted to play Ruhi Bhalla. The supporting cast was finalised with the names of Ali Goni, Shruti Bapna, Neena Kulkarni, Mihika Verma, Shireen Mirza, Shahnaz Rizwan, Sumeet Sachdev, Abhay Bhargava, Pankaj Bhatia, Gautam Ahuja amongst others. Anita Hassanandani Reddy and Sangram Singh were roped in to play the negative roles.After 7 years leap, Aditi Bhatia was finalized to play grown up Ruhi.Ruhanika Dhawan stayed back in show for playing Ishita and Raman's daughter Pihu. Abhishek Verma was finalized to play grown up Adi.Krishna Mukherjee was finalized to play Aliya who is Abhimanyu Raghav(Mani)'s niece and Adi's love interest.

Reception

It received the highest ratings of Indian serials in the UK until the end of March 2015 when Diya Aur Baati Hum reached 173, 300 viewers compared to YHM's 156, 500.[18] For October- November 2015, the show peaks up a ratings of 248, 300 viewers in UK. Despite being on run for nearly two years it was still one of the highest rated show on Indian television in January 2016 when it was ranked third in TRP ratings chart.[19]
