Michael Andrew Coupe (born 26 September 1960), is a British businessman, the CEO of J Sainsbury plc, parent company of the supermarket chain Sainsbury's; since 11 July 2014.[1][2]
In January 2014, Sainsbury's then CEO Justin King announced Coupe as his successor, after revealing that he would be leaving the role in June 2014.[3]
Early life
He was born in Hertfordshire. He grew up in West Sussex. Coupe read Physics at University of Birmingham from 1979-82.
Career
Coupe previously held numerous roles in British retail food chains including Unilever, Tesco, Dales Discount, Asda and Iceland. He previously worked with, and at one point worked above Justin King at Asda. King went on to work above Coupe at Sainsbury's.
He holds various other directorial positions: non-executive director of Greene King since 2011, member of the supervisory board at GS1U since 2010, director of Insights2Communications since 2012, director of the Institute of Grocery Distributors and director of GlobalNetXChange.
Sainsbury's
Coupe joined Sainsbury's in 2004 as Trading Director, and in 2007 was appointed to the Board as Executive Director and in 2010 was promoted to Group Commercial Director. Coupe has been credited with the chain's success in e-commerce and creating the company's 'Brand Match' campaign.
Personal life
He married Jill Parkinson in Richmond upon Thames in May 1990, and they have two daughters (born December 1992 and June 1995). In recent years he has lived in the Holgate area of York. He is a keen cyclist.
Coupe became a Life Patron for GroceryAid in August 2015.[4] He was previously the Fundraising President from 2012 to 2014.[5]
