Michael Lee Scurlock (born February 26, 1972) is an American football coach and former NFL player.
Early years
Born in Tucson, Arizona, Mike attended Sunnyside High School and later transferred to Cholla High School. He played college football at the University of Arizona, where he graduated with a B.A. in media arts.
Scurlock, nicknamed "Scurry," had 67 tackles as a freshman after redshirt year. In his sophomore year, he had nine tackles versus UCLA. He played seven games at nickelback his junior year and was Super Sleeper choice by Poor Man's Guide to the NFL Draft as a senior. He was All-Arizona at running back. He lettered four times each in football and track.
NFL career
In the 1995 NFL Draft, the Arizona standout was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round (140th pick overall). He went to the Carolina Panthers in 1999. After five seasons in the NFL, he retired on January 2, 2000.
Personal
Born in Casa Grande, Arizona, Michael attended Sunnyside and Cholla High School in Tucson, Arizona. He played college football at the University of Arizona, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts. After retiring form playing professional football in the NFL, Michael Scurlock served seven years as the Athletic Director for Westminster Catawba Christian School, the Varsity Football Head Coach and as a television color analyst for the Carolina Panthers Pop Warner “Little Panther’s Game of the Week.” He is a co-owner of Architech Sports and Physical Therapy. Scurlock was named to the All-Arizona Team, “Best in the West” during his senior year in high school as a running back. After being recruited by some of the most prestigious universities such us UCLA, Notre Dame, USC (University of Southern California) and many more, Scurlock decided to accept a full scholarship to the University of Arizona where he became one of Arizona’s premiere special teams and defensive players. Scurlock, nicknamed "Scurry," had 67 tackles as a freshman after his redshirt year. Scurlock was awarded Chevrolet Player of the game for his first official college start against Ohio State University. After four successful seasons at the University of Arizona and being part of the historic “Desert Swarm” defense, Scurlock still holds the record for the third longest interception return for a touchdown of 97 yards in school history. Super Sleeper choice by Poor Man's Guide to the NFL Draft as a senior, Scurlock was the highest drafted defensive back out of his 1995 class. In 1995, the Arizona standout was selected by the LA Rams, soon to be St. Louis Rams, in the 5th round (140th pick). He was a two-time Pro Bowl nominee. For the 1998-1999 season, Scurlock was given the Ram Attitude Awarded by Head Coach, Dick Vermeil and assistant coaches. An award given annually to a Rams player that best exemplifies extra effort on and off the field. After four successful seasons with the St. Louis Rams he was signed as a free agent to the Carolina Panthers in March 1999. Scurlock retired from playing football in the NFL in 2000.
Along with his wife Michaela Scurlock, who specializes in REO and Foreclosed properties and is the Qualifying Broker and Broker In Charge of Vision Group Realty in Charlotte, NC, Michael has done extensive community work. He has been instrumental in establishing youth camps, NFL team events, and charitable events. For many years he has volunteered his services for the Week of Champions, a non-profit organization that provides sports camp experiences to children, free of charge. In addition Michael has participated in a number of celebrity golf and softball outings in an effort to help raise funds for local charities. Michael most recently was asked to participate in the first annual Carolina Panthers Taste of the NFL. Michael also has spent endless hours as a motivational and inspirational speaker throughout the country.
Currently Michael is a Sheriff Deputy for the York County Sheriffs Department in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
