Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) is a public two-year college located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. With one of the most diverse student populations in Minnesota, MCTC enrolls nearly 13,000 credit students annually and is an active partner in initiatives designed to strengthen the social, economic and cultural vitality of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.[1] It is a part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System (MnSCU), which offers two year associate degrees, certificates, and diplomas in fields of study such as aviation, business, cinema, fine arts, healthcare, information technology, justice systems, and liberal arts.[2]

History

MCTC was formed in February 1996 by the merger of Minneapolis Technical College and Minneapolis Community College following the July 1995 creation of MnSCU.[3] They had shared the same campus adjacent to Loring Park for many years.

Minneapolis Community College was founded as the first campus of the Metropolitan State Junior College in 1965.[4] It changed its name to Metropolitan Community College and in 1979 the metropolitan system was broken up and the Minneapolis campus became Minneapolis Community College.[5]

Minneapolis Technical College was originally founded as the Girls Vocational School in 1914 by its first principal, Miss Elizabeth Fish. When a new building at 1101 Third Avenue South was completed in 1932 it was renamed Mary Miller Vocational School, after the teacher credited with opening the first school in Minneapolis in 1852. In the 1960s the name changed to Minneapolis Area Vocational Technical Institute . It entered the eighties as Minneapolis Technical Institute on a new 418,000-square-foot (38,800 m2) campus at 1415 Hennepin Avenue. Its final name change was to Minneapolis Technical College (MTC).[6]

In 2003, MCTC acquired adjacent land that previously belonged to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association's former Minneapolis headquarters. In Fall 2008, MCTC opened a new Management Education Center and Science building on this property.

In 2004, Metropolitan State University (Metro State) and MCTC started sharing programs and the Minneapolis campus of Metropolitan State University moved to the newly expanded MCTC campus from its original location a few blocks away. In 2010, the only Metro State programs still operating on the MCTC campus were theatre arts and business.

Buildings

Minneapolis Community and Technical College is made up of 11 buildings and a parking ramp.[7] Each building houses many student services.

Technical Building

The T Building houses the cafeteria and bookstore on the first floor. On the second floor are financial aid, advising and counseling, business services, the testing center, Public Safety, the mail room / E Store, and a coffee shop. The third floor has a computer Lab and IT services. The Learning Center is located on the fourth floor.[8]

Helland Center

The Helland Center is home to the Student Life Center. On the first floor are tables and chairs, a convenience store, and service desk. On the second floor are the Student Life information desk, the Student Senate, and the college newspaper. On the third floor are the Student Health Center and student lockers.

Irene H. Whitney Fine Arts Center

The Fine Arts Center at MCTC houses a performance hall, classrooms and offices.[9]

Whitney Hall

The Wheelock Whitney Hall's first floor is home to the MCTC Library. The second floor has a lounge area, and the third floor has classrooms.[10]

Bowman Hall

The first floor of Bowman Hall has the Human Services Department, the gymnasium, dance room, weight room, and equipment room. The second floor is home to the president's office, the Reading Department, and the Communications Department.[11]

Kopp Hall

Kopp hall houses Human Resources and classrooms.[12]

Science Center

The Science Center is home to science labs, classrooms and the Science Department offices.[13]

Management Education Center and Center of Safety Training

The Management Education Center houses the Continuing Education and Business Departments. The Safety Training Center is home to Custom Training programs.[14]

The College Foundation and the Wells Family College Center are other buildings on the MCTC campus.[15]

Programs

MCTC offers more than 60 career and occupational programs in aviation, business, education, health, information technology, justice system, manufacturing and construction, media arts, public service and the service industry. Career Programs

The college also has many clubs and societies, including a school newspaper. MCTC has an Aviation Center at Flying Cloud Airport, a Center for Criminal Justice in Saint Paul, and a Health Careers Institute in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis.

MCTC competed with other community colleges in men's and women's basketball as the Mavericks. In 2009, at the end of a 33-2 season, the Minneapolis men's basketball team lost to Richland College 58-57 in the NJCAA Division III National Championship. The school discontinued the basketball programs following the 2009-10 seasons.[16][17]

Student life

MCTC currently has 56 student life clubs. A wide variety of academic, social, and special-interest clubs and organizations are on and around the downtown Minneapolis campus. They include academic interest clubs, fine arts clubs,[18] honor societies, and special interest clubs.

Academic interest clubs:

Addiction Counseling Club – Mission: To give hands-on experience to students pursuing a career in addiction counseling.

Collegiate DECA – Mission: To help students build their skill sets and networking capabilities so they arere better fit for the business world.

Education Majors Union – Mission: To help connect students majoring in education and child development.

Engineering Club – Mission: To give students majoring in engineering an opportunity to get hands-on experience, and advice on the field.

Math Club – Mission: To further interest students in problem solving and mathematical theory.[19]

MCTC Human Services Club – Mission: To give students majoring in human services hands-on experience through education and networking.[20]

Media Generation – Mission: To provide support for students in film-making, video production, and screenwriting and sound arts.

Polysomnography Club – Mission: To educate students and the college community about sleep and polysomnography.

Psychology Club – Mission: To educate students about different forms of psychology.

Science Club – Mission: To assist students in pursuing their interest in science fields.

SkillsUSA – Mission: To provide support to students in trade, industrial, technical and health education.

Sociology Club – Mission: To educate students about sociology and how it affects our everyday life.

Student Design Collective – Mission: To provide support to students in graphic design and web and interactive media programs.

Student Nurses Association – Mission: To build a community among nursing students.

Theater Club – Mission: To promote and enrich the theater department in a direction of positive change.

Fine arts clubs:

Art Club – Mission: To help student artists experience and understand different types of art.

Writer's Workshop – Mission: To help writers push through their boundaries and promote creative writing.

Anime Club - MCTC Society of Modern Asian Visual Culture – Mission: To provide social opportunities and instructional resources to those interested in Japanese anime and manga.

Chamber Ensemble – A group for student instrumentalists who enjoy playing a variety of works.

College Choir - Mission: To help students who enjoy singing and are interested in improving their musicianship and vocal skills.

Jazz Ensemble – Mission: To help student instrumentalists and vocalists interested in learning how to perform in jazz idiom.

Theater – Mission: To give students an opportunity to participate in the production and performance of theater.

Honor societies:

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society - A program for students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and 12 college level credits.

Special interest clubs:

Asian Student Association - A group of students who share Asian cultures and want to promote diversity throughout the community.

Bike Collective – organizes a community of people interested in biking.

City College News – a student publication presenting news, features and viewpoints of interest to the student body.

Chicanos Latinos Unidos – Mission: To make a positive change and promote growth in understanding among ethnic groups.

Community Development Student Club – Mission: To promote social responsibility and community involvement of MCTC students.

Ethiopian Students Association – Mission: To increase diversity at MCTC through cultural events.

FOMG Campus Ministry – Mission: To share the gospel of Jesus Christ with all interested MCTC students.

French Club – Mission: To provide French outside the classroom.

International Student Association – Mission: To provide assistance to new students and promote the interest of international students.

JTMS Hapkido Club – Mission: To teach and improve knowledge of the traditional Korean martial art Hapkido.

Muslim Student Association - Mission: To give students an opportunity to unite in the religion Islam.

PAN Broadcasting Club – Mission: To bring a voice to MCTC students by using the airwaves and the Internet.

Philosophy Club – Mission: To provide a space where students can come together and discuss issues.

PRIDE – Mission: To provide a safe space for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Sisters for Social Justice – Mission: To offer students an opportunity to exchange ideas and participate in issues which affect women.

Soccer Club – Mission: To provide an opportunity for students to play soccer.

Socialist Alternative – Mission: To educate students on socialist ideals.

Somali Student Association – Mission: To promote and cultivate awareness through peer support, cultural activities and community outreach.

Spoken Word Club – Mission: To organize writing circles, open mics and slam poetry competitions.

Students Against Hunger and Homelessness – Mission: To fight hunger and homelessness, both on campus and in the greater community.

Student Veterans of America – Mission: To provide service to the veterans' community, the MCTC community and the community as a whole.

Student Air Traffic Control Association – Mission: To provide resources for current and prospective students to explore the field of air traffic control and aviation.

Student Senate – Mission: To insure student involvement in the decision-making process of the college.

Three Legged Frog – Mission: To improve awareness of environmental issues on campus.

Urban Farm Collective – Mission: To promote gardening among community members.

United Nations of Indian Tribes for Education – Mission: To promote cultural awareness of the American Indian people.
