Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala is an obesity surgeon in India.[1][2] He is also a laparoscopic expert[3] and the founder of the Centre for Obesity and Digestive Surgery[4] (Centre for Obesity and Diabetes Surgery) - a weight loss and weight management centre located in Mumbai.[5] He is the 'Chairman, Dept. of Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery' at Saifee hospital. He was awarded the first international centre of excellence designation by the US based SRC (Surgical Review Corporation)[6] Mumbai He has performed bariatric surgeries on several famous personalities, including the BJP President Nitin Gadkari,[2][7] NCP's Nawab Malik, State Cabinate minister Nitin Raut, BJP's Vinod Tawde and also the recent surgery of BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu.[8][9] He has also performed surgery on Gouri Shanker, Renu Devi – the minister of Sports and Salman Khan’s mom. He is involved in a lot of Charity work with Health Start, also a charity drive where patients donate their big size clothes, which was flagged off in Jan 2014 by Nitin Raut in Nagpur [10]
Personal life
Dr Muffazal was born and brought up in Mumbai. He pursued his Masters in Surgery (M.S.) from B.Y.L. Nair Hospital and completed 3 years of residency programme in general surgery, MBBS from the Grant Medical College University of Mumbai.[11] His interests lie in Cricket and Photography. He has also played under 19 cricket for Mumbai. He lives in Mumbai with his wife, Priyanka Kaul.[12] He has three Kids—Kiaan and Zhiaan and Kiara(from his first marriage). He prefers playing football or collecting coconuts at US Club or playing foosball with his older son, Zhiaan at home. He loves to practice what he preaches and stays away from alcohol and prefers personal fitness as part of his daily routine.
Career
He underwent training in Bariatric Surgery with Dr Raul Rosenthal, Cleveland Clinic, United States, 2006. He was also trained at the Unit of Gastro Surgery, with Dr Piet Pattyn from the University of Ghent Hospital, Belgium, 2005 and also underwent Training in Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery with Prof. Seon Hahn Kim, Seoul, Korea, 2004. He has also been a Lecturer at B.Y.L.Nair Hospital- a teaching hospital in Mumbai.[13] Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala has performed sleeve gastrectomy surgery on Jayesh Malukani, one of the youngest Indian patient who is a 17-year-old boy.[14] He has performed Bariatric Surgery on the heaviest man in Asia who weighed all of 285 kg (627 pounds) in Tianjen, China.[15] He is one of the only Indian surgeon to have demonstrated live surgery in almost every Asian country. Till date he has performed the largest number of single incision sleeve gastrectomy surgeries in the world. He is the first surgeon to conduct laparoscopic gastric bypass in India. As a doctor, wellness is at the heart of everything he does, so when CODS was approached to partner with Miss Diva Universe 2014, saying yes was easy for him as it gave him a chance to take the message to more people, through the work he does with these fabulous and brave young women, who are stepping into the limelight to conquer the world. He also successfully operated on a 30-year-old woman with unexplained body aches, to find a live worm inside her bile duct. [16]

Awards
He was awarded 'Humanitarian of the year' by the All India Human Rights Association in 2007[21] and a Silver Medal at Shirin Mehtaji Oration for ‘Obstructive Jaundice’ in 1996 .[21] He was also awarded as the Gold Medallist in Anatomy at First Year M.B.B.S.[21]
