- In 1965 he was employed at the Treasury ot the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (New Zealand).
- From 1966 to 1968 he was employed at the Mission in Geneva.
- From 1968 to 1971 he was employed in Saigon.
- From 1971 to 1973 he was employed in Economic Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (New Zealand).
- From August 1, 1973 to April 1, 1974 he was Chargé d'affaires in Moscow.
- From 1975 to 1978 he was Director of Administration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (New Zealand).
- From 1978 to 1982 he was minister of the embassy in Washington, D.C.
- From January 1, 1982 to June 10, 1985 he was Ambassador in Vienna (Austria) with acredition in Budapest (Hungary), Warsaw (Poland), Prague (Czechoslovakia), East Berlin (East Germany) and Bucarest (Romania).
