The Pontypool, Caerleon & Newport Railway was incorporated on 5 July 1865 by the Pontypool Caerleon and Newport Railway Act.

Connecting Pontypool and Newport

On 17 September 1874 the railway opened to goods traffic from Pontypool South Junction to Maindee Junction in Newport.

On 21 December 1874 the line was opened from Pontypool North Junction to Panteg Junction.

Passenger trains

Passenger trains started to use the line and run to Newport High Street on the South Wales Railway over the St. Julian's railway bridge.

Wider use

From 1875 the London and North Western Railway used the line from Shrewsbury to Newport Mill Street.

GWR

The 9¾ miles of railway passed to the Great Western Railway on 13 July 1876.

In 1878 a connection was made from Llantarnam Junction to Cwmbran Junction on the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company line.
