Raja Rani (King, Queen) is a 1956 Indian Tamil-language film that starring Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini in the lead roles. The film was directed by A. Bhimsingh, produced by National Productions and written by Karunanidhi.[1]

Production

After the success of Parasakthi (1952), many producers approached Karunaidhi to write the scripts for them. One of the films he wrote was Raja Rani.[3] Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini were selected as leading actor and actress while S. S. Rajendran was selected to play an important role.[3] The film was shot at the now-closed Newtone Studios in Kilpauk. Its owners were Dinshaw K. Tehrani and Jiten Bannerjee, who supervised the audiography and cinematography respectively, G. Vittal Rao handled the camera. The dances were choreographed by Hiralal and Sampathkumar.[3]

Soundtrack

The music was composed by T. R. Pappa while the lyrics for songs were written by Mu. Karunanidhi, A. Maruthakasi, P. Kamatchi, M. K. Athmanathan, Villipuththan & Vivekan. Singers are N. S. Krishnan & T. A. Madhuram.[4] Playback singers are A. M. Rajah, Seerkazhi Govindarajan, S. C. Krishnan, M. L. Vasanthakumari, Jikki, N. L. Ganasaraswathi & T. V. Rathinam

The soundtrack was released under the label "Saregama".[5] The songs were well received especially songs like Manippura Pudhu Manippuraa by M. L. Vasanthakumari and Sirippu Idhan Sirappai by N. S. Krishnan & T. A. Madhuram[3]

Reception

Randor Guy of The Hindu stated that the film was remembered for "the alliterative dialogue of Mu. Karunanidhi and delivery by the legendary Sivaji Ganesan, pleasing music and fine performances of Padmini, SSR and others".[3]
