Raymond J Wieczorek (born in New Britain, Connecticut on December 9, 1928[1]) is a Republican politician from Manchester, New Hampshire, most recently representing District 4 in the New Hampshire Executive Council until 2012.

Career

Wieczorek was the director and president of the Manchester Scholarship Foundation between 1973 and 1976.[1] He became commissioner of the Manchester Housing and Redevelopment Authority in 1984, and was its chairman from 1986 to 1989.[1]

Wieczorek ran for Council to replace Republican Thomas Coluontuno, who had resigned after being appointed United States Attorney for New Hampshire.[2] Wieczorek defeated the Democratic nominee, state Rep. John Kacavas, and was elected to the Council in 2002. He served five terms as mayor of Manchester in the 1990s before being defeated in the 1999 election by Democrat Robert A. Baines.

He is best known for this quote regarding an article about the defunding of Planned Parenthood in New Hampshire. When asked if the contract could exclude the issuance of condoms, he said that he does not believe the state should subsidize contraception. "If they want to have a good time, why not let them pay for it?"[3]

Personal life

Wieczorek is a Korean War veteran, a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and owner of the Wieczorek Insurance Agency. He resides in Manchester, where he has lived since 1958. His wife Susan died in 2008.[4]
