Roslyn is a suburb in the city of Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand.
Roslyn is located 3 km NE of the CBD and bounded on the north by the North Island Main Trunk Railway (Milson), on the east by Palmerston North-Gisborne Railway (Kelvin Grove), the south by Main Street East (Terrace End) and the west by Ruahine Street (Palmerston North Hospital Area). Roslyn is also located 2.1 km SE from Palmerston North International Airport.
History
Richter, Nannestad & Co., a sawmilling company, acquired and cleared the vast deep forested area northeast of Palmerston North. In 1879, the company owned 600 acres of land in the area between Vogel Street, North St, Boundary Rd (now Tremaine Ave) and Featherston Street.
In 1902, Charles Mackintosh Ross, founder of Rosco (CM Ross and Co) purchased land in the east end of Featherston Street and built a house in 1908, Rangimarie (still extant). In 1924, Ross died, the property passing to his wife (who lived at the house until her death thirty years later). In 1940, Mrs Ross sold land around Rangimarie to the Government, which became the basis of a new state house subdivision. The Government later purchased more land nearby.
The area was known as Ross Block until 1948, when it was renamed Roslyn. Unfortunately, when the Post Office was established here, there was already a Roslyn in Dunedin. Therefore, the Terrace End-Roslyn Progressive Association had to find another name for the area. Rossmont was chosen because of the location; the fact the area is higher up from the rest of Palmerston North. Recently, perhaps because of the local primary school, the name Roslyn has resurfaced.
The Edwards Brick and Pipe works created the areas now known as The Pit, Vautier Park and the "Freyberg Pit" and their kiln is still located on Featherston Street. (Historic)
The area now Roslyn has been known under many names including Ross Block, Ross, Rossmont and Terrace End. Until recently Statistics New Zealand identified those who live in Roslyn as it is now, lived in Terrace End. Terrace End as it is now, was known as Brightwater.
Residential population
Although there is a mixture of zones, the suburb is predominantly residential and at the 2013 Census of Population and Dwellings, Roslyn had a population of 5,601.[1] Roslyn has the second largest population of any area unit in Palmerston North.
Facilities
Retail and Commercial
Roslyn, with its proximity to the Palmerston North International Airport, contains a busy retail sector. Hardware stores located here bring customers from near and across the city and region. A petrol station which contains a 24-hour, 7 day convenience store also brings in customers from near and far. There are numerous convenience stores, takeaway shops, bakeries, a vegetable and groceries store and a liquor store.
Roslyn has a community policing centre, which moved from Broadway Avenue. The Milson Fire Station is located here too.
The Freyberg Community Pool is open to the public for leisure.
The local pub is the Willowpark Tavern on Tremaine Avenue, which has been the venue of many past international and domestic music tour concerts. There is also the Birdcage pub located on the corner of Vogel and Milton Streets.
Industrial
A large industrial zone is present in the north and east of Roslyn, by the railway track. The manufacturing of concrete and plastic pipes, agricultural feed, distributing hubs, car parts are present also.
Schools
Five schools are in Roslyn. They are Roslyn School, Terrace End School, St Mary's Catholic School, Ross Intermediate School and Freyberg High School. There are also two Kohanga Reo, a kindergarten and a Tongan learning centre.
Terrace End Cemetery
The second, but oldest cemetery in Palmerston North is located at the foot of Vogel Street. It replaced the original cemetery (now Arena Manawatu) and is the resting place for many of the founding people of Palmerston North. Plots are now closed, however, descendants of those at rest here may also be interred.
The historic nature and serene surrounds of the cemetery can make for a peaceful destination for a leisurely stroll.
Street Name themes
Roslyn's street name themes vary from those of well-known writers, (Kipling, Milton, Shelley, Browning) to those of British place names and rivers, (Severn, Bristol, Battersea, Clyde, Mersey, Tweed, Avon, Tyne, Humber, Esk, Thames), plants (Koromiko, Rangiora) or even those of past Councillors (Haydon). Other themes which occur are Military and Victoria Cross winners (Upham, Ngarimu, Hulme, Freyberg).
Parks and Reserves
- Skoglund Park - formerly known as Humber Street Park, the park is a main football field and home to the Central Football Federation. It is named for Phil Skoglund, former MP for Palmerston North. It is located adjacent to Freyberg High School.
- Vautier Park - formerly a quarry for Edwards Brick and Pipes, Vautier Park is a main outdoor netball courts/park in Palmerston North. Located next to Freyberg High School, It is named for Catherine Vautier, a former teacher at QEC and who was instrumental in the formation of Manawatu Netball.
- The Pit - formerly a quarry for the Edwards Brick and Pipes, it is a former soccer ground, located below Skoglund Park. It is currently undergoing a restoration process with the planting of native trees, the building of waterways and walking paths.
- Norton Park - is located next to New Life Church and is an access to Featherston Street from Andrew Ave and vice versa. The ancient Little Kawau Stream flows through this park.

Local Government representation
Palmerston North City adopted city-wide representation in 2013.
Roslyn was formerly a part of the Papaioea Ward in the Palmerston North City Council. It shared this with other suburbs: Milson, Papaioea, Palmerston North Hospital Area, Kelvin Grove.
Central Government representation
- Prior to 1996, Roslyn was part of the Manawatu electorate. This electorate included parts of Palmerston North, east of Ruahine Street as well as Linton Camp, Turitea, Aokautere and Kelvin Grove. However, due to the reformation of the electoral system from FPP to MMP, the electorate of Palmerston North had its boundaries redrawn to include Roslyn.

Former MP Steve Maharey (Labour) spent some of his earlier life in Roslyn.
