Campuses
Zhangjiang Campus
The Zhangjiang campus is the main campus of the university and is estimated to be finished by 2016. It is located in the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park amongst many national and international R&D-based companies. The university is in very close proximity to the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute and the National Center for Protein Science Shanghai. The campus was designed by Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and won the Merit Award for Urban Design Award 2012 of the American Institute of Architects, California Council.[7] With 0.6 square kilometer and a construction area of 701,500 square meters the campus represents investments of the Shanghai Municipal Government of 4.169 billion CNY.[8][9]
Undergraduate teaching started in Fall 2014 at the Zhangjiang Campus and all graduate courses are taught there as well since the fall semester of 2015.
Downtown Campus
The temporary downtown campus is located in Xuhui District, Shanghai.
Academics
The low student-to-faculty ratio of at most 12 to 1 is hoped to ensure a very high teaching quality.[10]
In the future ShanghaiTech aims to host 1000 faculty, including 500 adjunct professors from institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities. The university will then educate 2000 undergraduate and 4000 graduate students (including 3,000 Ph.D. candidates).[11]
ShanghaiTech hosts three nobel laureates. Dr. Roger D. Kornberg, 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and James E. Rothman, 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, are Distinguished Professors-in-Residence at the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies (SIAIS). Kurt Wüthrich, 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is a Distinguished Professor-in-Residence at the iHuman Institute.
Undergraduate Program
The four year undergraduate program at ShanghaiTech University has 3 semesters (fall, spring and summer) per school year. The summer semester is mainly for course projects, with music and painting courses available.
The university puts lots of emphasis on liberal education and creativity cultivation, and develops several original courses, like Introduction to Information Science and Technology, General Introduction to Chinese Civilization and General Introduction to World Civilization.
The School of Entrepreneurship And Management provides students in all majors with required courses like Economics and Design Thinking.
Graduate Program
As of 2015 the graduate degrees are provided in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Once the newly designed graduate courses are accredited by the Chinese Ministry of Education ShanghaiTech will grant its own degrees.
