Shut In is a 2016 thriller film directed by Farren Blackburn, written by Christina Hodson and starring Naomi Watts, Oliver Platt, Charlie Heaton, Jacob Tremblay, David Cubitt, and Clémentine Poidatz.

The film was released in the United States on November 11, 2016 and on November 16, 2016 in France, by EuropaCorp. It was panned by critics and has grossed $7 million worldwide.

Plot

Following a recent accident that took the life of her husband and left her son paralyzed, a psychologist (Naomi Watts) finds herself isolated in her own home caring for her child. Cut off from the outside world during a storm, she starts to believe someone is inside her house trying to harm them.

Production

On November 5, 2014, it was announced that EuropaCorp had set Farren Blackburn to direct a psychological thriller based on the 2012 Black List script, Shut In by Christina Hodson.[4] EuropaCorp would finance, distribute worldwide and co-produce the film with Lava Bear Films.[4] Naomi Watts was set to play the lead role.[4] On March 18, 2015, Oliver Platt, Charlie Heaton, David Cubitt, Jacob Tremblay, and Clementine Poidatz were added to the cast of the film.[5]

Filming

Filming began in mid-March 2015 in Canada, as actress Watts was spotted on March 15 during filming in Sutton, Quebec.[6] Filming took place in Eastern Townships of Quebec before the production moved to Vancouver, British Columbia.[6]

Release

In March 2015, EuropaCorp set the film for an February 19, 2016 release.[7] On December 15, 2015, the release date was pushed back to June 17, 2016. In February 2016, the release date was pushed back again to September 9, 2016. In May 2016, the release date was pushed back again to November 11, 2016.[8]

Box office

Shut In was released alongside Arrival and Almost Christmas and was expected to gross around $6 million from 2,058 theaters in its opening weekend.[9] It ended up grossing just $3.7 million, finishing seventh at the box office.[10]

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 0%, based on 24 reviews, with an average rating of 2.6/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Fatally undermined by a clichéd, confused plot and a total absence of thrills, Shut In wastes its talented cast – and viewers' time."[11] On Metacritic, the film has a score 22 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[12] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C" on an A+ to F scale.[13]
