Special Honours 2009

The Special Honours List 2009 was announced in August 2009 as a result of the reinstatement of the appellation of "Sir" and "Dame" to the New Zealand Royal Honours System by passing Special Regulation 2009/90 "Additional Statutes of The New Zealand Order of Merit"[1] a legally binding regulation with the force of law in New Zealand.

The recipients are displayed as they were styled before the redesignation and arranged in the order of publication in the New Zealand Gazette.[2][3]

The New Zealand Order of Merit

The Queen has been pleased to make the following redesignations in the New Zealand Order of Merit:

Knights Grand Companion (GNZM)

The undermentioned Principal Companions to be redesignated Knights Grand Companion of the said Order.[4]

Dames Companion (DNZM)

The undermentioned Distinguished Companions to be redesignated Dames Companion of the said Order.[5]

Knights Companion (KNZM)

The undermentioned Distinguished Companions to be redesignated Knights Companion of the said Order.[6]

Widows of Knights Grand Companion/Knights Companion

The undermentioned spouses of Principal and Distinguished Companions of the Order to be granted the use of the courtesy title of "Lady".[7]
