In 2010, the Jaipur Xavier Educational Association (JXEA) — a trust established in 1950 by the Jesuits — in collaboration with the Xavier Alumni, started St. Xavier’s College, Jaipur. It is a co-educational, self-financed Catholic minority institution, affiliated to the University of Rajasthan. Established and maintained by the members of the Delhi Province of the Society of Jesus, it offers undergraduate courses in Arts, Management, Computers and Commerce.

History

St. Xavier's College was founded in July, 2010 in Jaipur[1] by the members of Society of Jesus and Xavier's Alumni. This event marked the beginning of another chapter in the long history of Jesuits' association with Rajasthan. The Jesuits first came to Jaipur in 1729 at the invitation of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in order to help in setting up an astronomical observatory.[2][3] They returned to Jaipur in 1942 at the invitation of Mirza Ismail, the then prime minister of Jaipur, to start a school in the city. St Xavier's School was built in 1945 in the large plot of land made available by Mirza Ismail.

Accreditation and assessment

Since its inception, St. Xavier's College has been affiliated with the University of Rajasthan. It is accredited by the University with the task of preparing students for degrees in Arts and Commerce along with Management and Computers.

Academics

St. Xavier's College, Jaipur, offers three-year undergraduate degree courses, such as Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons.) English and Economics, Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) and Bachelor of Computer Applications (B.C.A.); and it has recently applied for postgraduate courses such as Master of Human Resource Management, M.A. English and M.Com. ABST. The postgraduate courses are expected to begin in the academic year starting in 2014. The syllabi for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses are prepared by the University of Rajasthan. Evaluation comprises mid-term tests and final examinations.

Admissions

Admission of new students begin in the middle of May and go on till the end of June. Prospective students can obtain application forms from the college office. Students who have obtained higher marks are allowed to take on-the-spot admission, whereas others are required to appear for an interview before being admitted.

Festivals

The college organizes an annual festival called "ZEST" that involves various activities, games and functions. The Department of Economics organizes an annual festival called "Synergy" that involves various competitions among the students of various colleges in Jaipur. Teacher's day (Sept 5), St Francis' Day (Dec 3) and Christmas are celebrated with gaity.[4]

Magazines and publications

The college also started its monthly college magazine recently, from 2013-14 session. The Department of Economics publishes ECONOPSIS, an annual publication featuring articles on college life and on economics. The Department of Computer Science has started X-TechZine, which is published annually featuring articles on subjects related to Computer Science. The English Department publishes Literati and the Economics Department publishes Arthika. Each of them is published annually featuring articles on the respective subjects. The interdisciplinary college journal IMPETUS, is published annually.

Xavier's College Alumni (XCA)

Xavier's College Alumni (XCA) was launched on the occasion of the farewell of the first batch (2010–13) of St. Xavier’s College, Jaipur, on 27 February 2013. The Xavier's College Alumni logo was unveiled on the same day by Fr. Sebastian Anand S.J (Director, XCA) and Mr. Alan Antony was elected as the first president of Xavier's College Alumni, Jaipur.

New campus

A new spacious campus is under construction in a large plot of land acquired at Nevta on the Mahapura - Nevta road, near the Nevta dam. When the construction is complete some of the courses will be transferred to this location.
