"Stones Throw from Hurtin'" is a track from British pop-rock performer Elton John's 1989 album, Sleeping with the Past. The songs tells about that sometimes people have to let stuff they once loved go if they can't get it and that some things can never get better.

Wynonna Judd's contemporary country cover was featured in the 1992 film Leap of Faith.

Inspiration

This song contains a falsetto by John which was achieved by him whispering into the microphone and the volume being increased for the final mix. This was done to achieve a vocal style similar to JJ Cale.

The song was intentionally created to serve as a tribute to Marvin Gaye.
