"Sweet Love" is a song by American R&B singer-songwriter Anita Baker. It was the second single from her critically acclaimed second studio album, Rapture. It was released in August 1986.
Chart performance
The song was Baker's first big hit single, peaking at number two on the Billboard R&B chart, number three on the Billboard adult contemporary chart, and number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1986.[1] The song also peaked at number 13 in the United Kingdom and spent two weeks at number 21 in Canada.[2][3]
Awards
Baker won two Grammy Awards at the 1987 ceremony: Best R&B Song, earning her (along with Gary Bias and Louis Johnson) a songwriting award. Also, the album containing this song, Rapture, won in the category Best Female R&B Vocal performance.
Performances and cover versions
- Baker performed "Sweet Love" on Saturday Night Live on April 11, 1987.
- In 1994, jungle artist M-Beat released a cover version with singer, Nazlyn, on vocals.
- American R&B group EOL (Elements Of Life) covered the song in 1998.
- British R&B female trio Fierce covered the song in 2000, peaking at number three in their native United Kingdom (ten places higher than Baker's original version had peaked there fourteen years earlier) on February 6 of that year. This version had the slightly altered title "Sweet Love 2K".[4]
- Jazz musician Najee covered the song and turned it into an instrumental version for his debut album, Najee's Theme.[5]
- Pinoy Dream Academy Season Two scholar Apple Abarquez performed this song as her piece for the show's ninth gala performance night.
- Toni Braxton sampled "Sweet Love" for "Tell Me" off her 2002 album More Than A Woman
- MF DOOM sampled "Sweet Love" for "Hoe Cakes" off his 2004 release MM..Food.
- Beyoncé covered "Sweet Love" during her medley of "Sweet Dreams" and "Dangerously in Love 2" for her I Am... Yours revue.
- Filipino R&B singer Jay R covered the song from his 2008 album, Soul In Love.
- American Idol season 9 contestant Tim Urban covered on 3/30/10.
- Canadian rapper Drake sampled "Sweet Love" for his 2007 song "Think Good Thoughts".
- The song was also played in the episode of Moonlighting entitled "The Son Also Rises" on September 23, 1986.
- The daytime soap opera General Hospital used the song once.
- British band Rough Copy sampled the song on their debut single "Street Love".
- The Late TK Mhinga, a South African RnB Artist covered it on her 2001 album Tsakani.
