Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary (once called Teknaf Game Reserve is the only game reserve forest in Bangladesh.)[1] It comprises an area of 11,615 hectare. This is one of the few places in Bangladesh where Elephants can be seen in the wild. It was established in 1983 as a sanctuary to protect wild Asian Elephants. It is located in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar District.[2] This vast sub-tropical forest has several other attractions like Nitong Hill, Kudum Cave, Kuthi Hill etc. The popular Toinga Peak has an elevation of about 1000 feet. This Sanctuary is rich in biodiversity.

The Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary in Cox’s Bazar district is situated approximately between 20055´ and 2105´ north Latitude and 92010´ and 92018´ east Longitude in the southeast part of Bangladesh. Teknaf was declared a game reserve in 1983 under the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment) Act, 1974.The area of Teknaf Game Reserve is 11,651ha but it is renamed as Sanctuary in 2009 with the same location and area (11,615ha).Teknaf has a humid tropical monsoon climate. Located on the banks of the Naf River. The area due to its seaside position near the Bay of Bengal receives strong winds from the southwest in the summer and gentler northeastern winds in the winter. The area is blessed with a warm tropical climate and sufficient rainfall which enable to support a wide biological diversity. It encompasses three biological series, Surma Series, Tipam Series and Dupi Series.

Location and area

Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Teknaf peninsula at the south-eastern corner of Bangladesh. It spreads in 5 Unions of Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar district; these Unions are: Baharchara, Hnila, Subran, Teknaf and Whykheong.
