The following is a timeline of the island of São Nicolau, Cape Verde.
Prehistoric era
- 131 to 126 million years ago - The seamount formed
- 11.8 to 5.8 million years ago - Tortonian and Messinian rocks formed[1]
- 6.2 to 5.8 million years ago - Messinian rocks formed
- 1.7 to 1.5 million years ago - The lower part of the Monte Gordo Formation formed[2]
- 100,000 to 50,000 years ago - The upper part of the Monte Gordo Formation formed[2]

- 1461: December 6 - The island first discovered
- 16th century - The island first inhabited
- 17th century: Ribeira Brava founded
- 1810 - Forte do Príncipe Real built to protect against pirate raids
- 1832 - Population: around 5,000[3]
- 1866 - Seminário-Liceu de São José, the sland's first seminary opened

- 1975 - July 5: Cape Verde declared independence from Portugal and became and independent nation
- 1977 - December 9: SC Atlético football (soccer) club established
- 1980 - Population: 13 572[4]
- 1986 - São Nicolau Island Championships held its first editiion
- 1990 - Population: 13 665[4]
21st century
- 2000 - Population: 13 661[5]
- 2001 - The São Nicolau Cup, the Super Cup and the Opening Tournament held their first editions
- 2003 - February 24: Monte Gordo Natural Park established
- 2005 - The Municipality of São Nicolau broken into the municipalities of Ribeira Brava and Tarrafal de São Nicolau
- 2010
- Population: 13 074[6]
- 2013 - A new terminal which replaced the older terminal at the island's airport
- 2015 - Hurricane Fred struck the village of Carriçal[7]
