Timothy Jude Smith[1] (better known by his stage name, Timmy Trumpet) is an Australian house DJ and producer. Smith made his big break in Ibiza; playing live trumpet solos over electronic dance music tracks during DJs shows.

He has supported and played alongside acts like Armin Van Buuren, Carl Cox, Fedde le Grand, Dizzee Rascal, Fatboy Slim and the Stafford Brothers.[2] Timmy also makes regular appearances on the FOX8 reality TV show The Stafford Brothers.[3]

Timmy Trumpet has become known internationally for his jazz elements in the realm of global dance music. Now as a combined DJ/instrumentalist, he is ranked in the top 3 DJs in Australia (ITM Poll), performed at Ibiza's Pacha and Miami's WMC, and mixed both Ministry of Sound and Pacha albums. Signed to Ministry of Sound, three of his singles have reached the No. 1 spot on the ARIA Club chart. Timmy performs over 200 shows per year, including major festivals and international clubs. He is the No. 1 ranked DJ in Australia according to the 2015 inthemix DJ Awards.[4]

Early life

Timothy Jude Smith, later known as Timmy Trumpet, is from Sydney. While a youth he attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. 'The Sydney Conservatorium of Music Access Program' included free weekly tutorial from Sydney Symphony Orchestra's Anthony Heinrich. According to an interview with Scene Magazine, Smith left the Conservatorium of Music in year 9 after "setting off a fire alarm." However, he says the move to a public school system was positive as it allowed him to become more involved in jazz music.[5]

Career

Music

Timmy Trumpet has a number of tracks signed to Ministry of Sound, Onelove, Central Station and Neon Underground. His 2011 single "Horny", a collaboration with DJ Tenzin, hit number 5 on the Aria Charts in late 2011.[6]

In 2011 he had material included on the compilation Electro House Sessions 4 for Ministry of Sound, which he produced with DJ Rob Pix.[7] The album has 42 electro house tracks from DJs such as PNAU, deadmau5, Bag Raiders, Avicii, Tommy Trash, Afrojack, Tom Piper and Tiesto.

Starting in 2010, Timmy produced two consecutive summer albums for the clubbing brand, PACHA. The PACHA 2010 compilation was also mixed by Australian born Pacha Ibiza resident Sarah Main and the Platinum selling Jazz outfit from South Africa, Goldfish.[8] The CD featured tracks from Fedde Le Grand, David Guetta, The Temper Trap, La Roux, TV Rock and Dirty South. Timmy partnered with Dan McKie 2012's PACHA Summer Anthems with the album including Timmy Trumpet's single "Tromba Ye Ye Ye."[9]

Timmy Trumpet spent the majority of 2011 touring in Australia before traveling overseas to promote his then new EP Trrrumpet. His early original singles such as "Sunset," "Nothing Between us" and "Sunrise" were all supported by Central Station Recordings. Central Station was Australia's original electronic dance music label, but is now owned by Ministry of Sound.[10]

Timmy Trumpet is now ranked the No. 3 DJ in Australia taking over mainstages across Australia with the king-size Future Music Festival National Tour as well as mixing this years much anticipated and renowned 'Ministry of Sound Sessions 10 CD' featuring his own No. 1 Aria Club Chart single 'Melbournia'.

TV appearances

On 21 January 2011 FOX8 premiered The Stafford Brothers a reality TV series following the lives of Matt and Chris Stafford on tour across Europe, produced by TV host Wesley Dening.[11] The first season featured 6 episodes. Timmy Trumpet is one of the show's leading characters alongside Matt's longtime girlfriend and cover model Brooke Evers. He reappeared in Season 2, which premiered in January 2012.

In 1998 Timmy Trumpet had a guest appearance on Nine Network's The Midday Show, which was hosted by Kerry-Anne Kennerley.[12]

Major performances

In 2011 it was announced that Timmy Trumpet would support the Swedish House Mafia on their first live Australian tour.[13] In the same year Future Entertainment announced them as the main stage headlining act on the 2012 Future Music Festival tour alongside Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and special guest Fatboy Slim.[14]

On 23 February 2011 the Stafford Brothers commenced their first official world tour with 35 shows scheduled within a period of 90 days.[15] As part of his role on FOX8's Season 2 of The Stafford Brothers, Timmy toured with the DJ duo during selected performances throughout Australia, Asia, the Americas and Europe.[15]

Aside from worldwide tours, Timmy Trumpet has secured performances at Miami's WMC, Ibiza's Pacha and London's Ministry of Sound as well as other major festivals such as Tomorrowland in boom, Belgium.[16] He has also maintained residencies at a host of Australian festivals including Summafieldayze (2007–2011), Sensation White (2009), Parklife (2009–2010) and Stereosonic (2010, 2013).

On 25 October 2011 Timmy Trumpet was selected to support Mo-town legend Stevie Wonder on his only Australian Show at The Star in Sydney.[17]

Other

Timmy Trumpet's fashion label 'Wifebeaterz' specialises in oversized singlets that feature pop art characters of Australian dance acts including the Stafford Brothers, Bombs Away, Ruby Rose and Minx. The clothing line was made available in December 2011.[18]

He also runs a club night called "f#%k fluro" in Soho, Sydney which features local artists like the Stafford Brothers and international acts like Oliver Twizt.[19] The club night was originally started by the Gray Brothers in Brisbane.

Timmy hosts weekly radio shows that are broadcast nationally on over 58 stations. He regularly features as a special guest on 'Club Rev's weekly radio mix, as well as Grant Smillie's 'The edge' on Novanation.

The Timmy Trumpet iPhone app allows users to operate a digital trumpet on their phone.[20] The application works by blowing into the iPhone microphone while using the touch screen to depress the valves and tilt the phone up or down to change octaves. The application was made free to download from the iPhone Apps Store on 18 July 2011. Timmy Trumpet was sponsored by Morrison Digital Trumpet - MDT to receive one of the world's first digital trumpets.[21] The digital trumpet was invented by Steve Marshall.
