Todd Arthur Lucien Kane (born 17 September 1993) is an English footballer who plays for Chelsea, as a right back, but also has the ability to be used as a right midfielder as well a left back.

Career

Chelsea

Kane joined Chelsea at under-8 level and progressed through the youth system at the club.[3] He signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2011.[4] He was a part of the side that won the 2011–12 FA Youth Cup, beating Blackburn Rovers in the final.[3] He was a back-up substitute for the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final in Munich against Bayern Munich.

On 3 August 2015, Kane signed a new three-year deal at Chelsea, therefore keeping him at the club until 2018.[5][6] On 23 September 2016, Kane signed another new three-year, extending his stay until 2019.[7]

Loan to Preston North End

In November 2012, he joined Football League One side Preston North End on loan until January 2013.[8] He made his professional debut on 24 November 2012, in a 2–0 defeat to Leyton Orient.[9] He made a total of five appearances in all competitions during his time at Deepdale.

Loans to Blackburn Rovers

On 9 January 2013, he signed for Blackburn Rovers on a one-month loan deal.[10][11] He made his debut for Rovers on 11 January in a 1–1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.[12] On 15 March 2013, Blackburn re-signed Kane on another month-long loan deal.[13] Kane later extended his contract with Blackburn until the end of the 2012–13 season.[14] On 25 April 2013, Kane signed a new contract with Chelsea which keeps him at the club until 2016.[15]

On 25 June 2013, Kane rejoined Blackburn Rovers on loan for the entire 2013–14 Football League Championship season.[16] He scored his first professional goal against Barnsley on 24 August 2013 in a 5–2 win.[17] He scored his second goal for Blackburn in their 4–2 victory over Birmingham which turned out to be his last game for Blackburn.

Loan to Bristol City

On 14 November 2014, Bristol City signed Todd on a two-month loan until 18 January 2015.[18] On 15 November 2014, Todd made his debut for Bristol City as a substitute for Scott Wagstaff in the 75th minute against Swindon Town, the game ended in a 1–0 loss for Bristol City. On 7 December Todd made his first start for Bristol City against Telford United in the second round proper of the FA Cup, where Todd played the full 90 minutes; the game ended in a 1–0 win for Bristol City. In the dying minutes, Todd suffered a shoulder injury from Godfrey Poku.[19][20]

Loan to Nottingham Forest

After his loan spell at Bristol City expired, Kane was loaned to Championship club Nottingham Forest until the end of the 2014–15 season.[21] Kane made his debut for Nottingham Forest on 10 January 2015 against Sheffield Wednesday, which ended in a 2–0 lost for Nottingham Forest.[22] After his debut, Kane made three consecutive start under the management of Stuart Pearce including a 2–1 away win against Derby County.[23]

After Dougie Freedman replaced Stuart Pearce Kane's role in the squad was reduced greatly, only making the bench twice and ending up as an unused substitute for both games.[24] On 7 March 2015 that Kane returned to the starting line-up in the match against Middlesbrough; the match ended in a 2–1 win for Nottingham.[25] On 6 April 2015, Kane came off the bench replacing fellow goal-scorer, Tyler Walker, in the 75th-minute against Brentford. In just two minutes after coming off the bench, Kane scored from a cross Ben Osborn to the far post; though the two goal lead was not enough for a win as Nottingham drew 2–2.[26]

Loan to NEC Nijmegen

On 6 August 2015, Kane joined NEC Nijmegen on a season-long loan to gain first team experience abroad.[27] On 12 August, Kane made his debut coming off the bench in a match against Excelsior which ended in a 1–0 win for NEC Nijmegen.[28] On 23 August, Kane made his first start in a 2–0 loss against Ajax.[29] Kane scored his first and only goal of the season in a 3–1 loss against FC Utrecht on April 10 2016.[30] His impressive performance throughout the season was appraised by Chelsea's technical director, Michael Emenalo.[31]

Kane's season was cut short when he suffered an injury during the game against PEC Zwolle on April 20, 2016. Kane was stretched off the pitch in the closing stages of the game. After an MRI scan, it was confirmed that Kane had torn his anterior cruciate ligament, ruling him out for 4-6 months.[32]

International career

Kane was first called up by England to represent the U19s at a friendly tournament in Limoges during October 2011. On 8 August 2013, he was called up to England U21 squad for the first time for a friendly match against Scotland.[33]
