Felis margarita thinobia, known as the Turkestan sand cat, is a subspecies of the sand cat native to the Transcaspian region.[1][2]

Museum specimen of the Turkestan sand cat are darker and greyer in skin colour than African sand cat, have less pronounced markings and only 2–3 tail rings.[3]

The subspecific status of sand cat recorded in Iran has not been assessed.[4][5]

Distribution

The Turkestan sand cat occurs in the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts to the east of the Caspian Sea and north of the Kopet Dag mountains up to the Syr Darya river.[1][6][7]
