The Turkish occupation of North Syria, or the Syrian Security Belt,[1] refers to areas captured in summer 2016 by Free Syrian Army units (comprised predominantly of Syrian Arabs and Turkmen fighters) backed by Turkish Armed Forces, during the Syrian Civil War. The Syrian Security Belt consists of an 1,620 square kilometres area which includes around 217 settlements including Azaz, Dabiq and Jarabulus, which was previously controlled by the Islamic State or the Syrian Democratic Forces.
