Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUSOK, formerly University of Sokoto) is one of the initial twelve federal universities in Nigeria founded in 1975. It is in the ancient city of Sokoto.

The school is named after Usman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate.

Academics

UDUSOK is a four-year university that also features associate degrees and remedial programs (pre-degree). The university has a large and accredited medical program and the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, which is one of the largest hospitals in Nigeria and West Africa. It is mostly accessible to those of low income and, like most Nigerian hospitals, it does not require health insurance before treatment.

The main campus houses the administrative offices and the sciences, social sciences, agriculture, arts and languages, education and research facilities. The city campus hosts the college of health sciences and school of veterinary medicine. A third site hosts the modern university teaching hospital.

A fourth site was built during the last administration Bafarawa of Sokoto State under the leadership of Alh. Attahiru Bafarawa. This site houses the School of Matriculation Studies where students opting for the Remedial Studies are admitted and taught before enrolling in the university (provided they have passed the exams). The Remedial Studies are only conducted for the Sciences and Science related courses. Admission into other courses is sought by the standard JAMB (UME or DE) procedure.

The university is one of the highest ranking in northern Nigeria due to its high moral stand, academic excellence and its ability to resist the prevalent ASUU strikes that bedevil Nigerian government universities.

Student life

Usmanu Danfodiyo University has several student unions which include the Students Union and National Association of Science Students (NASS), department associations as well state associations like NAKATSS, SOSSA, NAKESS, ZAMSSA and NUASS for Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Anambra state students, respectively.
