Vizag Metro is a proposed rapid transit system in the Indian city of Visakhapatanam, Andhra Pradesh. The system is proposed to reduce traffic congestion as well as providing a modern and efficient public transport system in the city which became the largest city and the main hub for economic activity of Andhra Pradesh after the states bifurcation.[1]
History
A metro rail project has also been planned by GVMC to arrest chaotic traffic condition on the streets. After the proposal was submitted by the GVMC in February 2014, the Urban Transport Department gave in-principle approval for going ahead with feasibility studies and DPR. On 25 June Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has called for global tenders for a Detail Project Report to be prepared for a 25 km stretch based on traffic density. GVMC received bids from RITES, SYSTRA group, SREI infrastructure finance Limited, Hyderabad based Aarvee Associates; Delhi-based LEA Associates South Asia Private Limited and US-based AECOM Consultants for preparing the detailed project report. But later the project went under the scrutiny of a seven-member committee set up by the state government and the tender process had to be scrapped.[2]
Post Andhra Pradesh bifurcation
The Visakhapatnam Metro Rail system is proposed in AP reorganization act.

Detailed Project Report
For the feasibility study the state government appointed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to carry out study and asked it submit a detailed project report (DPR).[4] For the Vizag metro project DMRC has prepared two separate DPRs one of 34.45 km route length and another of 45.5 km length with extension up to Gajuwaka from Madhurawada on Line 1.[5] Metro Rail is proposed on three corridors totalling 45 km. The longest corridor, proposed from Madhurawada to Gajuwaka, runs 31.2 km. Though initially the corridor was proposed from Madhurawada to NAD, the Gajuwaka stretch was included later, adding another 8.2 km. The other corridors are from Gurudwara junction to One Town (5.5 km) and Tatichetlapalem to Park Hotel via University Road (7 km).The DPR has proposed to fix fare at Rs 10 for a distance from 0 km to 5 km, Rs 20 from 5-10 km and Rs 30 beyond 10 km. As per the DPR, it is executed in four corridors — NAD Junction to Kommadi Junction (Madhurawada) for a distance of 22.8 km, Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.26 km), Thatichetlapalem to China Waltair (East Point Colony) (6.91 km) and NAD Junction to Gajuwaka (8.1 km), a total distance of 42.55 km. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will execute the Visakhapatnam metro rail project at an estimated cost of Rs 13,488 crore. It is expected to be completed in a period of four years.[6]
Plan
As Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi announced in his US Trip that Visakhapatnam along with Ajmer and Allahabad will be made as a smart city in collaboration with the United States & rolled out plans for metro rail in Visakhapatnam. Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu also appointed Former DMRC Chief E. Sridharan as consultant to look into Visakhapatnam Metro .[7]
