WPWX is an Urban Contemporary radio station that serves the Chicago area. WPWX is owned by Crawford Broadcasting, and broadcasts at 92.3 megahertz. WPWX's urban format debuted in the spring of 2001 in an attempt to go head to head with the longtime urban radio leader in Chicago, WGCI-FM (Crawford Broadcasting previously had a Christian talk format on the 92.3 frequency for over 40 years under the call letters WYCA). The WYCA call letters were in use from 1959-2001. WPWX currently is the Chicago home to The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, and at one time carried both the Doug Banks Morning Show and The Tom Joyner Morning Show (both of whom worked at WGCI from the late 80's until the mid-90's). WPWX radio personalities include Shagg, DJ Pharris, Ozman, Young Si, Maha, DJ Nehpets, Jade, Paris Taylor, Mic Jonez, G Skee, Hot Rod, & Rickey Rampage. The station also features mixers DJ Am Pm, DJ K-Ceasar, DJ Big Pat & DJ Allstyle.
WPWX is not to be confused with WPWR-TV, the local MyNetworkTV affiliate that was known as "Power 50" for a few months in 2006.
WPWX broadcasts from a tower located in Burnham, Illinois, on the Illinois/Indiana state line, about 20 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. Its studios are in Hammond, Indiana.
The station began broadcasting on September 14, 1949, using the call letters WJIZ-FM. The call letters WJOB-FM were used from 1955-1959, then WYCA from 1959-2001.
