West Down, Devon

The centre of the small village of West Down

West Down is a small village on the route between Braunton and Ilfracombe and nine miles from Barnstaple in North Devon. The village sits in a bowl in the hills at 450 feet above sea level. It has a 14th-century church, and many of its older buildings date back to the 17th century.[1]

Fullabrook Wind Farm

For many years controversy surrounded the proposed erection of wind turbines at the local Fullabrook Wind Farm.[2] There was opposition on the grounds that the wind farm would spoil the surrounding landscape and thereby disrupt tourism on which the local economy depends. However, the proposals to build 22 wind turbines was given the go-ahead in order to become fully operational in 2010.[3]
