Westfield Burwood is a large shopping centre in Burwood, in Sydney, Australia. The centre first opened in 1966 and was completely rebuilt in 2000.[1]
Events
Westfield Burwood participates in Burwood's Christmas Carols in the Park in December. The event is held in Burwood Park, opposite Westfield.
History
Westfield Burwood first opened in October 1966, and was one of the first shopping centres in Australia.[2] The original centre was half the size it is today, and was first to have a Hoyts cinema inside the centre (later closed sometime in the 1980s). The original centre was partially built on the site of the old Hoyts Astor theatre which was rebuilt as the Hoyts Burwood. Farmers was the original main store becoming a subsidiary of Myer and later renamed Grace Bros. Westfield Burwood was renovated in 1972 and again in 1976.
In 2000, the centre underwent a $300 million redevelopment, and was the first Westfield to be completely demolished and rebuilt. The redevelopment doubled the size of the original centre, allowed for more stores in the centre, and created Food on the Park, a food court that extends to a balcony overlooking the park. The new Westfield Burwood was opened on 17 August 2000.[2]
The Myer store closed on Saturday, 24 March 2007. A David Jones store opened on 5 May 2007 by model Megan Gale. It was the first David Jones store to open in Sydney's Inner West, i.e. between Market Street and Elizabeth Street and Parramatta. A new cosmetics department was built, the whole top floor was renovated and carpets were relaid in some sections. Store fittings in other departments remained the same.
The shopping centre is now under the management of Scentre Group.[3]
Access
Westfield Burwood has over 3000 parking spaces accessible via Wilga Street or Victoria Street.[4] Burwood is serviced by various public transport services to destinations including Sydney Airport, City, Parramatta, Campsie and Five Dock. It is a short walk from Burwood railway station.
