AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary through postsecondary that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.

Westwood High School is extremely proud to be an AVID National Demonstration school. AVID exists in over 4700 schools across the nation. Currently, only 125 of those schools have achieved National Demonstration school status.

Students in the AVID program are required to take an AVID elective class (each year), as well as Advanced Placement and other rigorous courses. The AVID curriculum prepares students for college by emphasizing writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, rigor, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities. Over 300 students are currently enrolled in Westwood's AVID program.

The IB Programme offers a demanding high school curriculum of pre-university studies that incorporates the best practices of prestigious schools from around the world. It is designed for outstanding high school students and has earned the distinction of being the leader in college preparation; giving IB Diploma holders access to our nation’s and the world’s leading universities.

The IB Programme is available at Westwood High School for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Our freshmen and sophomores participate in the IB Middle Years Programme which will prepare them to enter and be successful in the IBDiploma programme as juniors and seniors. Graduating seniors in Westwood’s previous IB Diploma cohorts have been offered admission to universities such as Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Brown, Princeton, Notre Dame, Carnegie-Mellon, Brigham Young, University of Rochester, and Claremont McKenna to name a few.

Other IB grads have chosen to stay in-state to attend the prestigious honors colleges available at ASU, UofA, and NAU. In addition, Westwood’s IB Diploma class of 2013 was offered $17 million in grants and scholarships for their undergraduate and graduate educations!

Below are links to some of the universities who offer IB Specific scholarships for our students in recognition of the prestigious prorgram that they have completed. This is not a comprehensive list, but a work in progress. For more information on college recognition, please visit www.ibo.org.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

When Arizona adopted these standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics, the documents became known as Arizona's Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.
