Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch is a Welsh-medium primary school in Leckwith in the community of Canton, Cardiff.
General
The current headteacher is Christopher Newcombe, who joined the school on 1 September 2016. Mr Newcombe was previously Deputy headteacher at Whitchurch Primary School in north Cardiff.
The school's current catchment area (from 2013) includes most of Riverside (South Riverside and most of Pontcanna), all of Grangetown, western Butetown, parts of Canton, and a small part of Cathays. The school feeds Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. Before 2013, it fed Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr.
In 2016, about 20% of the pupils came from Welsh-speaking homes where at least one parent or guardian spoke Welsh, and around 80% came from non-Welsh speaking homes. About 20% came from ethnic minority backgrounds.[1] This is a significant increase from 4.3% in 2003.[2]
The name 'Pwll Coch' means 'red pool' in Welsh and refers to a pool in the River Ely and a hamlet which grew nearby, close to the modern Tŷ Pwll Coch public house. Tradition states that the pool filled with blood following the Battle of St Fagans in 1648.[3] As a result of recent changes, the area is no longer part of the school's catchment area.
The Estyn report on the school in 2011 noted that both its current performance and its prospects for improvement were 'good'.[1]
History
The school was founded in 1996 and the founding headteacher was Miss Anna Roberts. For the first three years of its existence it was situated in a building on the site of Fitzalan High School. In September 1999, it moved to a new purpose build building (designed for 1 form of entry [1FE], or 30 pupils per year) on land opposite Fitzalan. By September 2000, the number of pupils had increased significantly and the school had grown to 2FE. To house the larger numbers, temporary accommodation was erected on the school grounds.[4] In 2006, an extension for the junior classes was completed and the school became 2FE in all years by 2008. Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch are proud to be the first purpose build Welsh medium school in the capital. [1]
By September 2011, the school was temporarily expanded yet further with that year's intake being 3FE. The intakes for 2012 and 2013 were also 3FE. In 2014, the intake reverted to 2FE. In 2016, there are over 500 pupils on roll. From April 2009 to July 2016 the headteacher was Mrs Meinir Howells.
