Season 1961–62 was the 85th football season in which Dumbarton competed at a Scottish national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 55th time, the Scottish Cup for the 67th time and the Scottish League Cup for the 15th time.
Overview
Following six seasons of top half finishes in the league, season 1961-62 was to prove disastrous, with Dumbarton suffering its worst league performance in the club's history, finishing in 17th place with 28 points, 26 behind champions Clyde. Things were not helped by a huge turnover in playing staff, beating the previous record set in the 1918-19 season.
In the Scottish Cup, results were no better, with Dumbarton losing in the second round to Highland League opponents Ross County, having received a first round bye.
The League Cup sectional ties were equally as bad, with only one win from six games.
Locally Dumbarton lost out to East Stirling in the semi final of the Stirlingshire Cup.
Therefore the decision to appoint the club's first full time manager was not to be the success hoped for and Bobby Campbell resigned at the end of the season, to be replaced by Jackie Fearn, on a part-time basis.
