A.F.C. Stoneham is an English football club based in Eastleigh, Hampshire. The club competes in the Wessex League Division One. The club was known as Ordnance Survey F.C. from 1929 until 2006, and Stoneham F.C. during the 2006–07 season.[1]
History
The club was founded in 1919 by soldiers returning from World War I as Royal Engineers (Ordnance Survey Office) F.C. Playing in the Hampshire League from 1920–21, the club merged with a Post Office team in 1923–24 and became Southampton Civil Service F.C. The following year, The Royal Engineers (OSO) F.C. split from the Civil Service club but the two shared the same ground. Renamed Ordnance Survey in 1929, the club dropped back into local Southampton leagues in 1933–34, and even switched to Sunday League football between 1960 and 1966.[1]
Returning to the Hampshire League in 1997–98, Ordnance Survey remained in Division Two apart from one season (1999–2000) in Division One. With the introduction of a new Division Three in the Wessex League, the club joined that division and finished mid-table in their first season in 2004–05.[2] For 2006–07, Division Three was renamed Division Two, and Ordnance Survey was renamed Stoneham, although the club finished third from bottom and dropped back into the Hampshire League as the bottom tier of the Wessex League was disbanded.[3] Adding "A.F.C." to their name, Stoneham won the Hampshire League in 2007–08 and finished in the top ten in the next five seasons.[4]
After finishing fourth in the new Hampshire Premier League Senior Division in 2014–15, Stoneham were promoted to the Wessex League Division One for 2015–16, at level 10 of the English football league system.[5]
