Aeonium gorgoneum (name etymology: Aeonium and mermaid) is a species of flowering plant that belong to the Crassulaceae family. The species is endemic in Cape Verde. The plant was first scientifically described by Johann Anton Schmidt in 1852.[2]

Its local name is called salão.[3] The plant plays a role in traditional medicine for the treatment of bronchitis.[3]

Distribution and ecology

Aeonium gorgoneum is found on the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente and São Nicolau.

Possible synonym

The plant name Sempervivum gorgoneum J.A. Schmidt ex. Cout, published in 1914,[4] may be a synonym.[5]
