Although many nations boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow because of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the country itself participated in the Games held in the capital city of the Soviet Union. Also, the nation returned to the Olympic Games after missing the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal.
