Airport Road, Kozhikode begins at Thondayad Junction[1] and ends at Calicut Airport, about 20 km away. The road passes through Palazhi,[2] Pantheeramkavu, Ramanattukara and Kondotty Thurakkal towns before reaching the airport.

History

100 years ago Valiyangadi and the beach area were the centres of Kozhikode city. In the 1970s the downtown shifted to Mananchira area and again, in the 1980s, Mavoor Road became the centre of attraction. In 2010s, Thondayad Bypass area and Palazhi on the Airport has emerged as the new city centre with a vibrant night life.

Thondayad

Thondayad Junction is an important intersection of Kozhikode city, India.[3] This junction connects the city to the eastern town of Kozhikode District and so the traffic is heavy. The junction also connects to the northern and southern cities of Kerala by express roads. Thondayad junction is accessed from Mavoor Road on the western side.

Palazhi Junction

Palazhi is a suburb of Kozhikode city in India. It has risen to prominence quite recently because of the creation of a township called Hilite Mall here. Palazhi town is four kilometre from Thondayad junction in Kozhikode city. Metro International Cardiac Center and the Cradle Maternity hospital are situated at Palazhi. Palazhi was originally a village with waterlogged streets in monsoon creating problems for the residents. Recently the area has been highly commercialized because of the proximity to the highway road and the eastern part of the city. The creation of Hilite township and Hilite Mall has increased traffic issues in and around Palazhi.

Methott Thazham

Methott Thazham is a small village on the western side of Palazhi. This place is famous for the Bhayankavu Temple and the Ollur Shiva Temple. City suburbs like Vazhipokku, Manathal Thazham, Poovangal, Mecheri Thazham, Kaithapadam, Kattukulangara and Kommeri are near to Methott Thazham. Methott Thazham is directly connected by a main road to Kottooli and Pottammal junctions.

Hilite Township

Hilite township is a residential and commercial facility located at Palazhi junction. Hilite Mall is the most spacious shopping mall of north Kerala with 1,400,000 sq feet of shopping space. It is part of the Hilite City (11.256873°N 75.821287°E), an integrated township project almost completed now.[4]

Pantheeramkavu Junction

Pantheeramkavu or Pantheerankavu is a small town near Kozhikode city in India. Pantheerankave or Pantheeramkavu means, the place with Twelve Kavu(Temples). Today Pantheeramkavu is a fast-growing town with a population of 45,495. Pantheeramkavu has an average literacy rate of 84%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 82%. In Pantheeramkavu, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The road towards the east of Pantheerankavu connects to other villages like Perumanna, Puthoor Madam, Mundupalam, Punathil Bazar and Payyadi Meethal. The end of the road is in a suburb of Kozhikode city called Palazhi or Milky Sea. This locality is the home of the sprawling Hilite Mall and the township attached to it.

Ramanattukara

Ramanattukara is the biggest town between Kozhikode city and the airport. There are two busy road junctions in Ramanattukara and the first takes you to the airport on the left side. The second junction is called 'Nisari Junction' and it takes you to the University of Calicut. Ramanattukara town is growing very fast as many shopping malls, a 5-star hotel named "KADAVU RESORT" came here.This 5 star hotel is only 2.5 kilometers away from this town. Ramanattukara acts as a major town in the land routes such as Thrissur to Calicut, Trivandrum to Calicut, Manjeri to Calicut and finally Coimbatore to Calicut.
