Alshermond Glendale ("Al") Singleton (born August 7, 1975) is a former American college and professional football player who was a linebacker for ten seasons in the National Football League during the 1990s and early 2000s. Glendale played college football at Temple University. He was drafted in the fourth round (128 overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and played professionally for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys.
Early life
Singleton was born in Newark, New Jersey and attended Irvington High School.[1]
He played college football at Temple University, where he was a starter (39 out of 41 games) at inside and outside linebacker. He finished as the school's third all-time tackle leader (390 tackles).
Professional career
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Singleton was selected in the fourth round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During the first years of his career he was used mainly as a backup strongside linebacker and special teams player.
In 2002, he was named the starter after Shelton Quarles was moved to the middle linebacker. He finished with 89 tackles, 2 interceptions and contributed to the team winning Super Bowl XXXVII.
Dallas Cowboys
On March 13, 2003, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent to take over the starting strongside linebacker position, that was previously handled by the departed Kevin Hardy.
On December 23, 2004, he was placed on the injured reserve list with an abdomen injury. The next year the team switched to a 3-4 defense, but was still able the remain the starter at the left outside linebacker position, until suffering a broken clavicle against the Arizona Cardinals during week 8 and being placed on the injured reserve list on November 1.
In 2006, he lost his starting job after Greg Ellis was converted from defensive end to linebacker, but was able to start 6 games after Ellis was lost for the season with an Achilles injury. He wasn't re-signed at the end of the season.
Post-professional career
On July 31, 2015, Singleton returned to the Buccaneers franchise as a coaching intern.[2]
Personal life
Singleton owned and operated Dry Cleaners stores in Morris Plains, New Jersey.
