Basil Roberts

Basil Coleby Roberts DD MA (Cantab)^[1] (23 September 1887- 3 February 1957)^[2] was an Anglican bishop^[3] in the first half of the 20th century.^[4]

Born into a clerical family,^[5] he was educated at Marlborough College and Pembroke College, Cambridge. Ordained in 1912,^[6] his first post was as a Curate at St Jude’s, Salterhebble.^[7] He was a Lecturer at St Augustine’s College, Canterbury from 1913 to 1922.^[8] He was Chaplain of Selangor^[9] from 1922 to 1927^[10] when he became Bishop of Singapore,^[11] a post he held until 1940. The following year he became Warden of St Augustine’s^[12] and an Assistant Bishop of Canterbury.
