Bremsnes Church (Norwegian: Bremsnes kyrkje) is a parish church in Averøy Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located in the village of Bremsnes on the eastern coast of the island of Averøya, just west of the city of Kristiansund. The church is part of the Bremsnes parish in the Ytre Nordmøre deanery in the Diocese of Møre. The white wooden church is a cruciform church that was built in 1771. The church seats about 350 people.[1]
History
Bremsnes has been a church site for centuries. The present church was built in 1771 to replace an older church that had burned down in 1770. Since Bremsnes was the only church for the "new" town of Kristiansund, it was important to have a church here, so the people immediately built a new church.
The previous church (that burned in 1770) dates back to before 1589, possibly even as far back as the 15th century. That church was long-form church that was said to be dilapidated by the 17th century, according to historical records. This church was built to replace an even older church, of which nothing is known.[2]
