Edin Cocalić (Bosnian pronunciation: [ɛdiŋ tsɔtsalitɕ]; born 5 December 1987) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Belgian club Mechelen and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Club career

Cocalić began his football career with Željezničar, where he played for eleven years and captained his team in the last three seasons spent at the club. He received numerous honours at youth level with his club and is known for being the youngest captain in the history of Željezničar at the time.

His highlight moment was scoring a second goal in a city derby against FK Sarajevo in a cup match, helping his team to a 3–1 win and eventually advancing to semi-final.[2]

Cocalić signed a contract with Panionios in January 2010 that would keep him at the club for the next three and a half years.[3]

On 3 June 2011, Panionios announced on its website receiving an official offer from the champions of Israel, Maccabi Haifa, for the services of Edin Cocalić, which they rejected.[4]

On 9 January 2012, it was reported by Panionios that Cocalić will join Maccabi Haifa on 17 January.[5]

In February 2015, Cocalić joined Belgian side Mechelen, on a three-and-a-half year contract.[6]

International career

Cocalić was the captain of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-17 and also a part of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-19 and Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 teams.

He received first senior call-up for Bosnia and Herzegovina in March 2015, making his debut against Andorra.[7]

Personal life

Cocalić became a father in March 2011. His wife, Merima, gave birth to a baby girl.[8]

Cocalić is bilingual, speaking Bosnian and English fluently.[9]
