Edwardsville Senior High School is a public high school located in Edwardsville, Illinois. It currently serves over 2,500 students and contains grades 9-12, and served 2456 students in the 2012-2013 school year. It is the only high school in the Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7 (simply known as "District 7"), and with six Primary elementary schools, four intermediate schools (two new elementary schools, one K-2 and one 3-5 being built in 2007), and 2 middle schools (with Liberty Middle School being completed in 2005), EHS is a funneling point for all District 7 students from Edwardsville and Glen Carbon north, up to Worden, Moro, Dorsey, Hamel, and Holiday Shores. This encompasses almost an entire portion of the county from I-270 north between I-55 and Illinois State Route 255 (excluding Bethalto, which has its own high school) north to the Madison county line.

History

Edwardsville High School was first located on North Kansas Street in downtown Edwardsville, and today that building is Columbus Elementary School, with several hundred square feet of space on the third floor which is used primarily as additional District 7 offices. The second Edwardsville High School was completed in 1925. It was expanded over the years creating a labyrinth of halls to form what is today Lincoln Middle School, on 145 West Street. The current Edwardsville High School complex was completed in 1996 by the Korte Company of Highland, Illinois, and is located by the intersection of Illinois Route 157 and Center Grove Road, near the entrance to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the largest university in the U.S. In terms of property space. While the current building was completed in 1996, it sat empty and unused until 1997 because the brick facing used on the building was lighter than what had been asked for in the design.

Academics, Fine Arts, and Clubs

Edwardsville High School is known in the Metro East area for its high academic and athletic standards, ranking it high among high schools in the state of Illinois and one of the top in the state outside of the Chicago area. The current principal is Dennis Cramsey. The school mascot is the Tiger, with orange & black being the main school colors. Many different sports teams have made it into state championships during the history of EHS, and the marching band has won first place at numerous competitions over the years. In addition to the high achieving marching band, the EHS Drumline, formed during the 2008-2009 school year, received numerous awards within its first four years of existence. At the WGI drumline championships Dayton, Ohio, EHS won 17th and 16th place in the nation in the springs of 2012 and 2013, respectively. EHS offers honors and AP classes, and a wide variety of classes in the core subjects of English, Math, Science, and Social Sciences; once graduation requirements are complete, these class options allows upper class students to choose better classes to suit their needs for college and beyond. The ACT test composite score is 22. 80% of students go on to a 4-year college and an additional 15% go to a 2-year college. In addition to numerous sports and classes, there are also numerous extra-curricular activities including Drama Club (and a local Thespian troupe), jazz band, war games, EPIC (Edwardsville Peer Influence Club), Tri-M Music Honors Society, and many others. The classrooms all have phone systems which connect to the main office and outbound land lines, as well as computer(s) connected to the internet and TVs with cable connections. Also, each classroom is installed with a Polyvision board. The high school is 3 stories tall with a building on the south side of Center Grove Road known as EHS South which is reserved for students in in-district detention, and is entirely solar powered. There are two main parking lots, as well as a teachers' lot.

Athletics & Facilities

Athletic facilities include a multimillion-dollar sports complex with a football stadium, Megatron screen, concessions stands, restrooms & locker rooms, additional soccer & football fields, baseball and softball fields, and a wrestling complex with a weight room and gymnasium. In 2013, it was announced that $4 million had been donated by notable alumni (former vice president of Coca Cola & an ESPN co-founder) Charles "Chuck" Fruit's wife, Sharon. It will include an Olympic-sized swimming pool. It was completed in the fall of 2014, in time for the swim team of the 2014-2015 school year to begin using it. It is the largest such complex in the Metro East (the nearest similar sized pool is in St. Peters, MO or Carbondale, IL) and additionally has two 1-meter (3 feet) diving boards and 1, 3-meter (10 feet) diving board and be called the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center. Also, there is a recycled-rubber track & field, tennis courts, additional soccer fields, and a garden area. Within the school itself there are 4 gymnasiums (including the main Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium), a 1/8 indoor track, a weight room, a separate wrestling facility, the Jon Davis Wrestling Center (which is its own building; it will be attached with the new pool building), and several locker rooms. In February 2013, the EHS boys basketball team won 3rd place at the state semifinals, the first time in the semifinals since 1956.
