Former Ploiești derby (Romanian: Fostul derbi al Ploieștiului) is the name given in football to any match between Petrolul Ploiești and Astra Giurgiu.
Astra was founded in 1921 in Ploiești,[1] while Petrolul was founded three years later in Bucharest as Juventus București, following the merger of Triumf București and Romcomit București.[2] In 1952 it moved to Ploiești, and changed its name to Flacăra Ploiești accordingly.[3] After 91 years, in September 2012, Astra moved to Giurgiu.
In terms of won trophies, Petrolul is the better ranked club, as they won the Liga I four times and the Cupa României three times. Astra won one Cupa României and one Supercupa României, both in 2014.
The actual rivalry started in 1998, when Astra promoted for the first time to the Divizia A. Even after the move, the rivalry continues between the governances of the clubs.[4] Though, Petrolul fans consider the derby with Rapid București the most important one.
