Grivnik Brigade
The Grivnik Brigade also called "Murmanskaya Rifle Brigade" was an independent Soviet brigade during World War II. This brigade fought alongside the Soviet 88th Rifle Division against the Finnish J-Group of the Finnish III Corps and the German SS North during Operation Barbarossa. They beat back both forces, forcing the Finno-German troops to retire to the city of Kestenga, near Lake Topozero in September 1941. The brigade consists of some local militia, the 242nd Rifle Regiment of the 104th Rifle Division and probably an artillery battalion of the same division. It became the 289th Rifle Division on 15 October 1941.
The 289th Rifle Division was established at Lubny in July 1941 and wiped out at Kiev 9.41. Recreated 10.41 and served near Leningrad. With 4th Rifle Corps of the Belarussian Military District in May 1945.[1] By 1946 the 4th Rifle Corps and the 289th Rifle Division had arrived in the Belomorsky Military District. The division was disbanded at Belomorsk with the corps on 10 July 1946.[2]
