Jigar Joshi (Gujarati: જિગર જોશી), also known by his pen name Prem (Gujarati: પ્રેમ), is a Gujarati language poet and writer from Gujarat, India. His significant works include Tane Mode Thi Samjashe (2010; ghazal anthology) and An Endless Topic... Ane Hu (2013, anthology of poems). The Indian National Theater, Mumbai awarded him the Shayda Award in 2015 for his contribution in Gujarati ghazal poetry.[1]
Early life
Joshi is born on 14 April 1985 in Rajkot, Gujarat to Madhukantbhai and Chandrikabahen. His father Madhukantbhai is also a poet and his grandfather Mahipatram Joshi was a renowned Gujarati literates. His family is native of Wadhwan of Surendranagar district. He completed his Std. 10 in 2000 and Std. 12 in 2002 from Shree Saurashtra High School, Rajkot. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce in 2005 from Shree Dhamsaniya Commerce College, Rajkot. He has also earned M.S.W degree from Samajkarya Bhavan of Saurashtra University. Joshi married to Archita on 31 January 2013, and they have a son, Vishnu.[1]
Career
Joshi started to write in 2005, during his college days. In 2007, his ghazal Vaarasama Udasi Mali Che, Saav Suni Agashi Mali Che, came out for first time in Akhand Anand. Subsequently, he got published in other literary magazines including Shabdasrishti, Gazalvishwa, Kavilok, Dhabak, Kavita, Navneet Samarpan, Uddesh, Kumar, Shabdasar, Shahide ghazal and Tadarthya. In 2007, his ghazal appeared in Kavitachayan (2007), a collection of selected poems published by Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. He has recited his poems at Akashvani, Doordarshan and other places of Gujarat. Currently, he is working as an editor of Tamtam Kids, a gujarati language magazine of Children literature.[1]
Works
Prem means Love in Gujarati.
He has written different genres including ghazal, geet, free verse, triolet, essay, short story, nursery rhymes and Children stories. But his main contribution towards ghazal and geet. He writes ghazal both of in Gujarati and Urdu. His first anthology Tane Mode Thi Samjashe (collection of ghazal) was published in 2010, followed by An Endless Topic... Ane Hu (2013; collection of poems). Before that, he had published his ghazals in Ishq Thi Ashq (2007) with Alpesh Pathak, a Gujarati language young ghazal poet. His poems critically acclaimed by several Gujarati literates including Chandrakant Topiwala, Suresh Dalal, Chinu Modi and Rajesh Vyas 'Miskin'. His works on Children literature was published as Takko Che Ke Tablu (2011) and Ukhana Re Ukhana (2015). Paraspar (2010) and Morning... Good Morning (2014) are compilation by him.[1][2]
Recognition
The Indian National Theater Mumbai conferred him The shayda award (2015) for his contribution in Gujarati ghazal poetry.
